Dispatches from the Drawing Board
- Today marks 3 years since the Rocky Mountain News stopped the presses. Always a day of remembrance for me and still a bit solemn, yet I can’t help but be proud for the time I spent there and the work that I shared with my fellow comrades in arms. For all of my colleagues, who just like this cartoon illustration, always seemed to kick the ass of the Big Dogs in town, this one is for you! Viva La Rocky!
- Changes are coming. Today I sign the papers to put my house up for sale. It will take some prep to get the place ready, but it’s time to downsize and sail to new horizons. I’m not quite sure what it means yet. THE BLOG WILL CONTINUE! Nothing changes here at DrewLitton.com. It’s just become a challenge to maintain a mortgage, pay health insurance and navigate the price of living in Denver on a single freelance salary. It comes down to dollars and sense really (pun intended). I’d love to remain in Denver but I’m entertaining thoughts of Austin, Portland, Maine, and Albuquerque, as well. I can’t imagine life without the Broncos, Rockies, Buffs, Rams, Avs or Nuggets so no matter where I end up, I will hopefully be able to keep the clients I have who have allowed me to draw cartoons about the Colorado sports I love since the News closing in 2009. So the next few months will be an adventure. Thoughts and prayers (not to mention job offers) are more than welcome.
- Today’s cartoon was actually one I did recently for ESPN.com and a great column by Roy Johnson about little dogs in the NCAA tournament. Teams like CU who clobbered Cal last night for instance. There are always the little teams that surprise. For me that would be TWC over Kentucky for the National Title in 1966.

Dispatches from the Drawing Board:
- I’m reminded this time of year and in the midst of more snow here in Colorado how much I miss my jaunts to Arizona for spring training. Don’t care much for the political climate there, but, oh, catching some sun in the 1st base bleachers can’t be beat.
- I think every one should be given one free week in Key West during the months of January, February or March. Did I mention I’m tired of the cold and snow?
- I’ve had a few comments from people who think I should be drawing more NBA cartoons. I try but tend to, much like the players, sleep through the 2nd and 3rd quarters of it.
- I find soccer more compelling than NBA basketball. Just saying.
- Actually I find watching bowling more compelling than NBA basketball. Yeah. It’s that bad.
- I AM, however looking forward to March Madness.
- Don’t know how I feel about this years NASCAR season. The level of road rage in the sport is now starting to remind me a little too much of the traffic on I-25. Bumper to bumper and fist to fist.
Here is a fair warning for every husband and guy in a relationship…DON’T TRY THIS at HOME!
- Great to see Gene back with us! He’s making huge progress in his recovery. Gene, you inspire us all!
- I had the great fortune of spending some time talking on the phone with my friend, Peg DeLeo, one of our most loyal readers, who was in town from her home in Minnesota. Hope to meet for coffee or lunch next time she is in town. She’s such a great lady.
- I’m busy doing some writing on a few new projects I’m trying to get off the ground. Both, very different than the work I do here. I hope I can announce something soon, but I’m trying not to rush the process.
- My posting schedule is a bit off, I know. February is like that, topics, at least good meaty ones, aren’t as easy to come by. That, and I go through brain freeze this time of year. One of the many reasons I’m considering relocating in the next 3 to 6 months. If nothing else, I need a good vacation, someplace warm where I can learn to sail
