The NFL: Toll of the Game

The Game of Pain

Kyle Orton. Brian Dawkins . Ben Roethlisberger.

The list could go on and on really. The sacrifice we saw from Kyle Orton on Sunday was nothing short of amazing. And yet, I wonder, was it worth the price. Will it be all the great when 10 years from now Orton aches form the game he loves. It concerns me when I hear about both Brian Dawkins and Ben Roethlisberger will play this weekend after both suffered concussions last Sunday. Will it impact their lives 20 years from now. Oh ,sure, we can say they all make a ton of money. But is money really worth the agony the punishment brings later?

  1. Good Morning from Omaha,

this is a great cartoon. look at the former NFL greats and near greats now. butkis has had several surgeries on both knees and uses, from what I have read 2 canes to get around.

Mike webster, the center for all of those superbowl teams, died almost penniless and suffering from so many concussions that he barely knew who he was and johnny unitas who played before the money got big was a real mess also.

and the nfl players association from what I remember doesn’t put but a pittance in the retirement fund that supposed to help support them.after all the sacrifices they made for the game.

its an issue that will hit the fan in 2010 when the cba gets re negotiated. Its going to be a mess.

Strive for excellence, nothing but your best.

  2. Well the human body wasn’t designed to smash into each other, that is not what it was made for. But that is why we love this sport. It is so hard and tough and it takes real courage to do what they do week in and week out. That is why we love the players and idolize them, because they are tough and smart men and that is all what young boys aspire to.

  3. They are all adults and know what they are signing up for. How can this game not take a toll on their bodies? Hopefully the athletes of today think about their heroics and the possible consequences. And I hope that they are the ones making the decisions to play, not being totally coerced. I love to watch football; the speed, the grace, the competition, the skills, and the heroics.
