Broncos Draft: Holy Tebow! And a new ESPN toon

Now that’s a Draft.

I go away for a few days and the whole world turns upside down. I was stunned at the first round developments and I’m still in total shock that McDaniels really took Tim Tebow. I had just assumed all the talk about him was a smokescreen so they could pick who they really wanted.

Crazy. That’s what I say. How about you? Got an opinon. I want to hear it. This is HUGE Broncos news.

ESPN Live DRAFT Cartoon: It’s now online at ESPN.com. ya gotta see this one too. I did two last night for the draft. One for DrewLitton.com and this one for ESPN.

How do you feel about the Broncos first round picks?

  1. The Broncos have drafted one of the best college football players ever to play the game. Weather or not his heroics will translate into the Pro’s is debated. Tebow is the only college player to ever rush for 20 touchdowns and pass for 20 in the same season. If there’s one thing Tebow knows how to do, it’s win. He has all the intangibles coaches look for in a quarterback, and his throwing motion really isn’t that bad. After a year working with Josh McDaniels, his kinks could be worked out. He can also come in and contribute for the Broncos right away, in short yardage situations – where Denver struggled last season. I expect to see the Broncos ‘Wild Horse’ offense much more this season. As Garrett Barnes pointed out, in order for Tebow to have success, the Broncos will have to be patient. Rushing him into the starting position is not the way to go. Coaching his technique his first year, and involving him in gadget plays is what the Broncos should do during his rookie season. Not one NFL expert can question Tebow’s toughness, and athletic ability. But his non-NFL throwing motion had many believing he would fall out of the 1st round, and maybe even slip into the 3rd. He has been working on his throwing motion, and met with the Broncos a few times before the draft. Head Coach Josh McDaniels obviously fell in love with him, taking a chance by drafting him in the first, while already having Kyle Orton, Brady Quinn, and Tom Brandstater on the roster. Tebow knows they took a chance on him,

“I’m going to work hard and not let them down,” Tebow said. “I definitely want to repay Coach McDaniels for the faith he showed in me. I want to be a great quarterback. I want to be a great quarterback for a lot of years.”

A question now is, is Tom Brandstater the odd man out in Denver? He has shown a lot of potential, and has many fans backing him. It is doubtful that Quinn or Orton are headed anywhere, so placing Brandstater on the practice squad seams like the logical answer. Although a team could sign him off the practice squad, to their active roster. The Broncos QB situation just got a whole lot more interesting! Tebow will defiantly push both Brady and Kyle to become better, I love both of Denver’s draft picks.

These two picks show the direction the Broncos are headed, they are the future of the team. They are both stand up class act guys, and physical players. I love the Broncos day one selections.

  2. Jon!

Great stuff! Clearly Brandstater is the odd man out. I’m certainly rooting for Tebow to prove everyone wrong. I’m just amazed at how many people, scouts and NFL types who are convinced he can’t play. He certainly can win and that’s a good thing. I always got the feeling that Cutler could care less about winning. Though Tebow cannot compare talent wise with Elway does posess one thing that Elway did…the desrie to win. You simply can’t coach that.

  3. Good Morning from Omaha,

I really think you can see where Josh is headed with his picks. He wants players with character not players that are characters.

Tebow, during his interview after being selected really impressed me with what he was saying about working hard and doing what he was asked to do etc etc etc. Then Mel went into a funk, again and this time he was joined by Steve young.

Just what does Mel Kiper Jr really know anyway. He seems to be like the groundhog who predicts the weather.

Its either going to be spring in six weeks by the calendar or spring in six weeks by his prediction. Come to think of it he kind of looks like puxatawnie phil. Maybe they are the same person. Have you ever seen them together” HMMMMMM.

Time will tell about Josh and his re vamped Bronco’s. Its going to be a great ride, like at the rodeo so cinch up the rope and hold on.

Strive for excellence, nothing but your best.

    Gene

  4. Great toon Drew!!!

I have to say, I *HATE* the Tebow pick!!! Especially trading 3 other picks to move up in order to take him. He was a GREAT college QB, but Eric Crouch was a great college QB too – and what’s he up to now?!?!?!?!?

McDaniels might be the only guy in the NFL who can coach up Tebow to potential, which is the only real saving grace in this situation. I have a feeling we’re in for a LOOOOONG couple of years though.

Wonder how many mediocre seasons McD will get?

  5. Drew,

Ha! Good Cartoon. Yesterday I wrote, picking Pike in the second was a bad idea. Thinking to myself it maybe a little “bit of a reach”, we don’t need a QB and McDaniels was not Al Davis. But it turns out Josh like the circus!I would preferred to take Pike in the second over Tebow in the first. Especially for costing us a 2nd,3rd,and a 4th round picks. Heck we could have probably got Tim in the 2nd with the way the draft was shaping up.

I don’t mind that we got Thomas over Dez, we made a solid choice and filled a need.

One of my biggest problems with coach is that he fails to look far enough down the road to see the big picture. Last year before the Draft he signed 3 free agent running-backs and with the first pick we get Knowshon and this year we trade for Quinn and then draft Tebow. Coach needs to be certain of his off season moves to address problems that we don’t look in the draft to address the same problems.

I guess as Bronco fans we will always have something to look forward to, last year, how would we do without Cutler and this year what are we going to do with Tebow the circus!!

  6. BS

Great comments and insight. When I put up my picks I wasn’t thinking of who I wanted the Brocnso to pick but rather who I thought they would take. Because McDanmiels was talking Tebow I just assumed it was a rue, but that he had his eyes on another quarterback. I agree with you that the picks they gave up to get Tebow are ridiculous. I think Josh acts like he is playing Madden football. I really do.

  7. Well, as far as exciting, I like this Tebow pick. It will be interesting to see how he develops. I agree that he has that winning attitude, he doesn’t need to be as skilled as Elway, that’s what we have coaches and masterminds for. Take what he’s got and design around that. Like what has been said before, that certain infectious desire to win cannot be taught, skill sets can be enhanced.

  8. Sherri,

Absolutely right on. Still, I’m concerned when I hear people in the NFL say stuff like “He can’t throw. Period” Time will tell on this pick. The bigger question is do the Broncos have the time to wait?

  9. Gene, good thoughts about the draft funk by Kiper and company. I thought last nights “production” was a little much. Too many talking heads in the mix and they wouldn’t hardly let Tom Jackson get a word in edgewise. And I don’t like it on Thursday night.

  10. Andy,

Thanks for the compliment. Your checks in the mail. I think you hit the nail on the head when you ask how many seasons will McDaniels get to “coach” Tebow through the process? That’s the million dollar question.

  11. Definitely time will only tell on all this, but I like the fact the Jon Gruden is positive about Tebow.

  12. My giddy husband told me that we’d picked Tebow (Sorry, I’m not a fan of watching the NFL draft coverage). I asked my husband, “How can you be so happy when, before today, all I heard was that Tebow wouldn’t make it in the NFL?” Now, let’s all celebrate…we picked a guy who can’t play in the NFL!

I love the character virtues of Tim Tebow but the Broncos aren’t drafting a church choir. Broncos are supposed to be drafting players to make the team better on the field. If Tim Tebow turns out to be the right quarterback for Denver, I’ll be thrilled. And, I just might join the church choir.

  13. I dont like the fact gave up three picks for Mr. Tebow, but he will have a lot to learn and he wants to!!! I still dont like McDaniels!!!! I dont think Josh lasts until next season!!!

  14. I’m not really happy with the Tebow pick because I don’t really feel QB was that high of a need compared to other areas. I am not sure it’s going to work out, but at least with Tebow if it doesn’t work, it won’t be due to a lack of effort on the player’s part. A much safer risk than Maurice Clarett. Better than Tommy Maddox, too.

  15. People get the wrong idea of Tebow, usually from his “aw shucks,” “God bless” post-game interviews. They also hear how often he runs and conclude he doesn’t pass. He threw for over 9,000 yards during his Florida career.

So let’s compare Tebow and Clausen on their passing games.

Clausen hit 68% of his passes last year, Tebow hit 70%.

Tebow had a rating of 164 and Clausen 161. (Tebow’s career rating was 176)

Clausen threw 28 TD’s and 4 Int’s last year (he had SEVENTEEN Int’s the year before).

In Tebow’s sophomore and junior years he was 32 to 6 and 30 to 4 respectively.

Last year he was 21 to 5 (he also added 14 rushing TD’s and 910 rushing yards)

The fact is that Florida’s offense was completely depleted in 2009 and the offensive line gave up 29 sacks (compared to 13 and 15 the 2 years before). The receiving corps was mediocre at best.

Bottome line: Tebow can pass. He was 31 of 35 for 482 yards in the Sugar Bowl last year… against the Big East champion.

Like I said, don’t be fooled by Tebow’s “aw shucks” attitude off the field. When he’s on the field he wants to knock your block off. (Think Russel Crowe in Gladiator.) And he’s totally fearless. He’s not gonna sweat a 4th and goal, he’ll be jacked up for it.

For the last 4 years defenses have sworn they were gonna take Tebow down. They never did, and after the game they all sing Tebow’s praises. These were SEC defenses… the same guys you see already in the NFL and being drafted right now.

  16. From Jim Souhan in the Minneapolis Star-Tribune (and I tend to agree with the statement):

“My quick take on the NFL draft:

-I suspect Broncos coach Josh McDaniels may be in over his head. Having nice guys playing quarterback and receiver is a quaint idea, but it doesn’t help you when you face third-and-10 and need a bullet pass to a dynamic pass catcher.”
