The Beast from the East

The Beast from the East. That’s what I’m calling them. These four incredible arms all on one team. Roy Oswalt, Roy Halladay, Cole Hamels and Cliff Lee. It’s enough to send a batter back to the dugout without even taking a swing. This is an amazing story. It could go down as the greatest rotation in baseball history. Let me know what you think. As for me, I’m just glad Cliff Lee didn’t go to the Yankees.

Good Morning from Omaha,
sounds like Phillie has put together the equivalent of a pitchers murderers row! the rockies will get the chance to face this beast this summer. The good news is the Slayor hopefully won’t. They are trying to shop Greinke and the value of cliff lee has helped them set the price they want, and it is a big one or they will keep him for another year.
NY wanted him but because of his anxiety disorder didn’t think he could handle the big town Maybe he could end up in Denver but the Rockies haven’t been mentioned in any trade talks.
baseball season is still months away and the chiefs are still in the playoff race so baseball is on the back burner until after the shadow of the chiefs evaporates.

Dear Mr. Litton,
I’m just glad the Yankee’s didn’t get let Let. However this leads me to wonder about one thing. With all this money that was spent on pitchers how much did they leave for batters. Your cartoon about the 4 armed moster is most accurate but has this left their hitting looking like a cartoon version of those starving kids I’d always see Sally Struthers talk about in those commericials?
All the best
Louis
Unless they EACH win 20 this season, it’s the ’71 Orioles.
Go Chiefs go!
“I’m just glad the Yankees didn’t get him.” I keep hearing that. Why? He’s more dangerous on the Phillies. Everyone hates the Yankees but it’s the Phillies and Red Sox that are out to buy the championship right now. Why doesn’t everyone hate them?
But will the Phillies have enough hitters, and healthy ones at that? And when they make the playoffs, will San Francisco smack them around again? Let’s find out next fall.
Drew,
thanks for the encouragement- the chiefs are going to need Denvers help with the raiders!!!!
Saw on TV where the owners are talking about reseeding the playoff slots 3-6. seems that the 9ers or the rams could win the NFC west with a record of 7-9 or at best 8-8 and get to host a wildcard team with a better record. SOME think that is not fair.
They put together 18 votes the last time the owners talked about doing this but they need 24 out of 32.
IF you win your division thats the way it goes- its kind of like a couple of years back when the chiefs pressed the league to add another wild card team to the playoffs-because they happened to have a fairly good record- and they were rebuffed- same thing should happen here. they all knew the rules at the start of the season. If they want to change the rules- like with 18 game schedule wait until this season is over. OH wait there is a lock out coming in March!!!
It may not matter.

Great drawing! Wonder how Lee will start, course going back to Philly is not like starting all over in a new city.
It reminds me a lot of the “Four Aces” Atlanta had back in the early to mid 90’s (Maddux, Glavine, Smoltz, Neagle). They were a dynasty, but never could grab more than the single title.
But what makes these Phillies more frightening are these names: Howard, Utley, Rollins, Ruiz, Polanco, Werth. Philadelphia has a much, much more potent offense than the Braves did during thier run.
Correction…I forgot Werth is gone to DC. Still, a pretty meaty lineup.
I’d like to inject a different point of view.
What would be different if the Yankees had gotten Lee? Honestly, it would have be something we had all expected and therefore accepted. The baseball landscape would not have changed that much. The only difference would be that the Yankees had actually spent money on a PROVEN starter, rather than a “flash-in-the-pan” (AJ Burnett? Carl Pavano?). Also, the AL has to deal with it, not the NL.
With the Phillies landing Lee, the NL needs to be concerned (I’m making the assumption that most who read this blog are, if not Rockies fans, NL fans. I apologize if this assumption is wrong). While it doesn’t necessarily make it more difficult to MAKE the playoffs (if anything, it takes Atlanta and Florida and the Mets down a notch in their attempts to get the Wild Card), it changes the make up the playoffs themselves. You don’t need anymore than 4 starters in a 7 game series. While none of these guys are infallible (as evidenced by their performances in the NLCS/World Series), it makes it terribly difficult to overcome. This is especially pertinent for a Rockies team that feels like it can contend for the NL bid to the World Series in the next 3-4 years.
Finally, the offense is terribly intimidating still. The Phillies won 96 or 97 games this season, and that was with many of their top players either having off-years (Howard was a LITTLE down) or struggling with injuries (Utley, Rollins). Their offence will not be a problem, especially in that bandbox. Also, they will only need to put up a few points anyway.
If anything, as a Rockies fan, I wish he’d have gone to the Yankees–it would have been one more thing that would have made it easier to continue hating the Yankees.
