The Big Apple Bites back: Melo Style

Everyone once and awhile one of those really fun images just seems to appear out of thin air. This one, oddly enough, came while showering. Now stay with me. The late great Bill Mauldin, who won multiple Pulitzer prizes as an editorial cartoonist, used to make it a rule that he had to have 10 ideas every morning while he sat in the bath tub. Creativity happens at weird times and usually it’s when you’re in the midst of some mundane task, like shaving, or driving a car. Anyway, I couldn’t pass up the chance to draw the witch from Snow White. It seemed like the perfect metaphor for Carmelo Anthony’s recent case of New York blues.

The song says ” If he can Make it there he’ll Make it anywhere, it’s up to you New York, New York.”

And, for Carmelo Anthony, so it is. He might be thinking by now, this Big Apple idea was a really bad one. And he’ll find out soon enough, if he hasn’t already, people in New York are much less forgiving than those of us here in Denver. Especially the media. It’s that old adage. Be careful what you wish for.

You all have any thoughts about Melo’s choking on the Big Apple? Rant away!

  1. Dear Drew,

I don’t feel a bit of pity for Carmelo Anthony’s situation. In fact the only person I feel sorry for is Chauncy Billups. To me the N.Y. fan’s are the 2nd toughest fans to please in America with Philadelphia being #1. I’m getting almost a sadistic joy out of this. On a side note I was thrilled when you mentioned Bill Mauldin. I got to know the man a bit through the stamp the post office put out of him last year. Anybody who can hack off Patton and get away with it is all right in my book.

Finally I need a little assistance with information from the regulars of this room. I want to surprise my father with tickets to the Rockies opening day game on April 1. He’s been through so much this last year. First with my mother’s fight with breast cancer, then finding out his mother (my grandmother) only has a short time left to live. He’s been very strong through this whole thing and I want to give him this gift so he can have an afternoon where he can really enjoy himself. I called the Rockie’s office yesterday to see about buying tickets but they didn’t have two tickets that were available next to each other.

Does anybody know who a person can contact like maybe a ticket broker who I could contact to see if I could purchase tickets from? A friend of mine did suggest Craiglist but I’m wary of that because I’m afraid I’ll get scammed. ANY information would be most helpful.

    Thank you in advance.

    All the best

    Louis

  2. Good Morning from Omaha,

I used to work with a guy who, when he heard someone was getting ready to jump ship and go to work somewhere else, would say “all grass is brown”. That was his response to the old metaphor about the grass being greener on the other side of the fence and with time his little statement always turned out to be true.

If you think about it every job has its grunt work, the things no one likes to do but everyone has to do to succeed. Its a lesson that Carmelo is in the process of learning in a far less forgiving atmosphere than denver. ALL of the choices we make have consequences and if you are going to do something for the money, that is the wrong reason to do it. He is young and he will learn from his mistake, if he is not sheltered from the truth by his entourage. we shall see.

I am so sorry for Louis’s troubles. Someone said once that if everyone threw there troubles into a big pile, you would want yours back, and in a hurry. Compared to Louis, I have very few troubles in my life and I’ll keep him in my prayers.

Strive for excellence, nothing but your best.

  3. This suits him well. I don’t think the Denver fans miss him

Louis, try StubHub. That’s the official 2nd hand ticket seller, and the tickets are guaranteed as they have to be crosschecked.

  4. Melo was a rock star in Denver, probably the single most popular athlete of the 2000’s in the area (Running down the list…Holliday? left just as he got interesting. Walker? Best years in St. Louis. Sakic? Avs were too up and down. Rod Smith? Great Guy, but in the middle of the Elway Hangover.)

If he’s a NY kid and wanted to go back, I could see his side of it: He had given the Nuggets some very good years and a few nice playoff runs. A couple of his seasons were worthy of MVPs, had they happened in the Northeast or Los Angeles. There’s a difference between selling out and cashing in.

Anthony should have known what he was getting into, however. The Knicks are snakebit, and the Melo-Billups combo isn’t enough to turn it around. Unless you’re in pinstripes, you’re a second fiddle in New York: just ask Patrick Ewing, Mark Messier or Eli Manning.

Another nice bit of Schadenfreude: The 2010-11 Heat have a worse record than the 2009-10 Cavs. I’d say look out for a playoff pickup, but only Phil Jackson is really capable of that. Maybe if Pat Riley took to the bench…

  5. Love the cartoon drew.

wow I was so off-base about the trade not knowing much about the guys the nuggets got it sounded like a bunch of no-namers but these guys can play!

For Carmelo its kind of turning into an episode of the twilight zone where you get your wish granted and everythings great until you bit into that apple. I feel like such a fool for believing all the lies that Melo was spouting here in Denver so watching the knicks suffer is really enjoyable.

Now in addition to checking out the Nuggs, Rocks, and Broncos I have to keep an eye on all these so called superstars that wanted out of town.

  6. Drew–

No sympathy at all for Carmelo! Having a bit of schadenfreude about his situation. If he doesn’t know how demanding the fans are in NYC, he really has been living in a bubble. We’ll see how long he lasts…

BTW, the drawing of the witch from “Snow White” is really awesome.
