A Brief History of American Sports Cartooning

I’ve been wanting to add this for sometime. I got a call from Aaron Rutkoff of the Wall Street Journal who is doing a tribute article on the legendary Bill Gallo. So I rummaged through my collection of cartoon magazines to send Aaron this Hogan’s Alley article to help with his research for the Gallo Tribute.

This great overview of Sports Cartooning was done by the great Murray Olderman for the magazine of cartoon art, Hogan’s Alley. I’ve added a couple of guys who weren’t a part of the original article, like Dirk West and Jerry Dowling. Dirk West was a huge influence on me and is the inspiration behind the reason I sign my name on my cartoons in lower case.

Dirk did these incredible mascot cartoons during the heyday of the Big 8 conference.

Someday I might do more research, add more names and turn this into an e-book or book if I can find a publisher who is interested in this valuable part of publishing history. This article will be found in a widget in the sidebar (soon) and under the about heading in the menu above. Grab some coffee and enjoy this incredible article.
