Sometimes you just have to draw the truth!

Today's cartoon is from the October Issue of Mile High Sports Magazine

I usually don’t cross the boundaries of what I normally would print in a daily newspaper. But then again, maybe that’s one reason newspapers are struggling. Not enough changes. Not enough acceptance that the boundaries of what we see as funny today was not what was acceptable in 1965. So when I e-mailed the rough for this to Doug Ottewill, who is my editor at Mile High Sports magazine, and asked if it was too edgy, he quickly replied “Love it. Roll with it”. It was music to my ears, because, quite honestly, doesn’t the cartoon express the way every Broncos fan feels about Josh McDaniels and the way he has dismantled a once great franchise.

So if this is a bit harsh for some people , well, sorry. But the truth will set you free.

  1. Good Morning from Omaha,

social mores’ have evolved and us older people, by our refusing to say it is wrong, have allowed the edge of the envelope to be shoved and pushed to where almost anything goes. Your cartoon, while expressing a sentiment that is held by a lot of people in Denver, is not offensive. BUT Its time for denver and the bronco’s to move past little Mickey D and get back to the business of winning. Mickey D is being used as an anchor to drag the bronco’s down. Lose the anchor and move forward to success. NO MORE excuses. You guys have a new coach, shake the old attitude, toss the anchor overboard and move full speed ahead into the 2011 season.

I like political back and forth if its clever. I really enjoy the daily show, even if I don’t agree with much of what Jon stewart says- funny is funny and it seems at the base of most funny stuff is the truth, even if its just a sliver.

Strive for excellence, nothing but your best.

  2. Drew,

The truth you have drawn speaks volumes! I couldn’t have drawn, or said, it any better than you. Now, it is time for the Broncos (and their fans) to move forward, and not look back on the McDaniels’ debacle. It is time to concentrate on the future, and all of the possibilities that lay ahead. It is going to take some time. Bronco fans need to be patient, and put their trust in Coach Fox’s staff, and management. Elway, Fox, and Xanders have brought in some great players. We simply need to be understanding, and give them a chance.

  3. Dear Drew,

First of all I want to thank you for your explaining the Romo joke yesterday. It made it much easier to understad.

Today’s cartoon is a home run, a GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLL, a slam dunk, and a TD combined. Personally I don’t think it was all that edgy though it takes a lot for me to consider it edgy.

Do you think when John Elway was playing late in his career he wanted a uniform like this only with the name Dan Reeves on it?

    All the best

  4. Drew:

The newspaper audience is far different (read: easier to offend) than the average sports fan. Don’t censor yourself! That’s the best thing about being an artist.

  5. Drew,

I’m highly offended… you didn’t come up with this one earlier. I’m cancelling my expensive subscription to your site… and I won’t come back again… until tomorrow.

    Mike
