Michael Sams and Tony Dungy. Better left unsaid.

Hatred stirs up conflict, but love covers over all wrongs. Proverbs 10:12

As a Christian myself, I always cringe when I hear other Christians proclaiming divisive words and feelings. I like Tony Dungy, but his recent statements about Michael Sams bother me greatly. I learned long ago that I am not God, so I try not to speak for him. I just don’t understand why a great many Christians can’t seem to grasp the essence of the gospel and leave it at that.

Mark 12:30-31

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”

  1. I appreciate what you are saying but its way more complicated than that. I have been studying that issue for over a decade. I have read books, studied the Bible both in Greek and Hebrew. Read commentaries, sociology studies, read articles submitted to DSM-IV, etc. It always pains me to see it get reduced by these kinds of things. Deep, deep issue.

  2. Drew, from what I read, his actual comments were not judgemental, he simply said as a coach he would not want to deal with the hype surrounding adding a gay player to a team, much the same way the Bronco’s didn’t want to deal with Tebow’s Christianity.

  3. Amen, Drew. It’s not complicated. It’s very simple: either you love your neighbor as yourself or you don’t. There are no second-class human beings in God’s eyes.

  4. Bill, I don’t understand what is so complicated about “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”

  5. Dungy, didn’t say anything that disputes what you quoted. It doesn’t me that he doesn’t love his neighbor. He did say: “I wouldn’t have [drafted] him. Not because I don’t believe Michael Sam should have a chance to play, but I wouldn’t want to deal with all of it. It’s not going to be totally smooth … things will happen.”

An exceedingly reasonable opinion, and one shared by most NFL officials, which is why Sam wasn’t taken until the 7th round. Notice, Dungy never said that he hates Sam because of his sexuality, nor did he say that Sam shouldn’t be in the NFL. In fact, he said the opposite. Dungy’s position is very clear. Sam is a mediocre talent and a marginal prospect. He’s too slow to be a linebacker and too small to be a defensive end. He doesn’t have the athleticism to be a starter, and he may very well lack the talent to make the squad. At best, Michael Sam will see the field for kickoffs and punts, and that will be it.

It just appears that everyone assumes that is what Dungy is thinking. He knows those scriptures probably better than we do. I am tired of everyone reducing these types of things to snippets of opinions thats all.

  6. While I agree , as a Christian, with the statement you’ve made here, The same folks that defend Michael Sam and other famous Gay Athletes and Entertainment types, are the first to criticize Christians like Tim Tebow, Tony Dungy, and Phil Robertson for their general beliefs when they are ASKED PUBLICLY about a touchy subject. The folks asking the questions already KNOW those answers before they ask the questions. I think it is so folks like you have something to write or draw about the next day.

  7. Thank God that Hank Stram, Branch Rickey, Don Haskins and (now) Jeff Fisher didn’t mind “dealing with the distraction” when they put together their rosters.

  8. I have not read or heard Tony’s comments, have only heard second hand accounts. I however am inclined to agree with Don, he was not being judgemental about Sams, but rather what he felt would be consequences he as a coach wouldn’t want to deal with. Fortunately for this world, we all don’t think alike.

  9. Badger, single best comment on this I’ve read both here and on facebook! So wish I would have thought of THAT as a cartoon idea It’s a brilliant statement!
