Baseball’s Latest distraction

The Madness of it all

We are in the midst of a technological Tsunami. Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, iPhones, it’s really never ending. Which, of course, makes fun material for a cartoonist. I’ll be finishing up my time here in Las Vegas at the international licensing expo. I’ve met some really incredible people here and I’ve been able to make, what I hope will be, some lasting contacts and friendships.

Q. Are you ready to write off the Rockies season? Let me know what you think.

  1. The Rockies are playing? They won’t exist for me again until there are new owners. I don’t go to games, I rarely read about or even listen to the games anymore, and this is from someone who was a baseball fanatic as a kid.

  2. Love to see a comic from you describing how the planets magically align for 30 (+/-) days every, oh, fifteen years or so, thus giving a perennial underachiever a brief glimmer of what it’s actually like to have a winning season in baseball.

Oh, and I’m in total agreement with you on Hurdle. Regardless of his win/loss ratio, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a coach as closely tied to his organization as him. The Rockies lost, and he would graciously take the beating with them. The Rockies won, and he couldn’t be prouder of his team. Real class act. I hope he finds better later on.

  3. What are these “Rockies” of which you speak?

I know Denver has a baseball stadium, teams from around the country come to visit it, but no one else appears. I know we have a practice squad for the visiting team to beat on, but a professional baseball team, no. Hasn’t been one of those in Denver since 2007.

Congratulations Monforts, do you enjoy looking at those empty seats?

  4. Good morning from Omaha,

I didn’t realize just how poorly the Rockies were doing this year until I purchased the paper yesterday. Its not good out there in Denver, but KC is not exactly tearing them up this year either.

the old royals started out pretty well in April, which is something they are not usually capable of doing, but then they reverted back to the old royals and slowly lost their grip on the AL central lead. Last night against the Rays the Royals managed only 2 hits and were beaten 9-0.

I don’t really know what the answer is for the Rockies but I still enjoy going to games at Coors Field.

If the game gets boring, the view of the mountains is spectacular. It is to me, as we don’t have many mountains or even great big hills here in Nebraska.

The Rockies are going through some morphing right now. I don;t know if Tracy is the answer either. But he is what you have to work with at this time. He needs to get some pitching, hitting and better fielding players but other than that the Rockies are on their way. Sounds like the Royals. If things don’t get better for either team watch for a fire sale of the semi decent players and a starting over in 2010.

Drew, STay away from the slot machines, they don’t call them bandits for nothing. I am glad that things are going well.

Better move on, STrive for excellence, nothing but your best.

    Gene

  5. I really dont want to say that I am done with the ROX this year, but I am done with the front office though. Did anyone get to see what a great improvement Matt Holiday has made in his defense(leftfield)? Two great catches that were on 9News last night on the 10 o’clock sportscast. We give away good players that become great, just like the 90’s with the Nuggets(thanks Bernie wherever you are). If this is any indication where things are going with the ROX IDK? I do enjoy going to the ballpark getting loaded (have a few beers in the car or take shooters with you before going in so you only have to have two beers for $15) and having an occasional hot dog(even though they are ten dollars) and the fireworks games. Win or lose this a such a good American tradition to be proud of. After I get out of the game I just think to my self “Go Nuggets, Go Broncos!!”. Have a great day, take the points in tonights NBA finals Drew. I dont know if its a lock but I sure would take a few hundred in Vegas if I were there. GO Magic beat the Lakers!!

  6. I see for some people it is never to early to jump off of the bandwagon. I think that the Rockies still have some exciting days ahead of them. I don’t think that they will make the playoffs but baseball is what summer is all about. Relaxing at the ball park with a beer and some good company telling lies to each other. “Rooting for the home team.” Not stressing over if they win or not because they are the Rockies. If the win then it is a bonus if not oh well maybe we will get them next time. That’s the life.

  7. The Rocks were finished after the first week, kudos to GM for tearing down an NL winner down so quickly, seriously tough i dont expect the rockies to compete until Dan Odowd gets the axe, but the monforts are content with losing so…………………….

  8. Just a thought, but why do the worst teams in baseball have some of the most highly regarded ballparks? PNC in Pittsburgh and Coors are always at the top of the list in “best ballparks” and the renovated Kauffman looks really nice. It’s kind of weird when you think about it.

  9. I don’t think the rockies will do much better. The bullpen is just not that good. Still, I will make any game any one gives me tickets for. It is like going to the Bears/Zephyrs games, but I still love going to ballpark to watch baseball.
