A Look inside the life of a Cartoonist: A Film by Chris Hampson and Annalisa Andrews

Uncategorized

Several weeks ago I was approached by two students, Chris Hampson and Annalisa Andrews, from Colorado State University who asked if they could do an interview for their class in Broadcast/TV Video Communications which is part of the Journalism program at CSU. This is the result of their incredible work.

I offer this instead of my usual Friday cartoon because I believe that the work of Chris and Annalisa deserves recognition and the piece they did is the finest, most polished, insightful interview I have had done in my entire career. I’ve had stories about my cartoons featured by most every TV station in the Denver area, and all of them have been great. But this one is special. Really special.

Yesterday CU in Boulder voted to kill it’s journalism program. To those who made that asinine decision I say take a look at this amazing work from Chris and Annalisa, two fine young “journalists” from CSU. And realize by killing your program that you’ve made a mistake. A big mistake.

But, then again, this is clear evidence that CSU was kicking the Buffs tail in Journalism anyway.

Oh, and remember those names: Chris Hampson and Annalisa Andrews. They will be winning Emmys, Pulitzers and Oscars someday. Yes they are both that talented!!!

And so here it is, in all it’s 14 and a half minute glory. Grab some popcorn and enjoy a look into my world.

A big Thanks to both Chris and Annalisa and to Mile High Comics for allowing us to set up shop for the shoot. And Thanks as well to Drew Soicher from 9News and Jim Saccomano, the head of media relations for the Denver Broncos for doing the sidebar interviews. The checks in the mail for all of the nice things you guys said.

And please leave some nice comments for Chris and Annalisa. They deserve to hear kudos about their work which is very well done.

  1. Good Morning from Omaha,

that is an impressive bit a video. Very well done. and like the wizard of oz, just a glimpse behind the curtain, not enough to spoil the illusion but enough that you can see the process you take to get to the conclusion. I am like the guy from channel 9, it was just seeing one of your cartoons and I knew it was something special I was reading.

    Have a great weekend.

Strive for excellence, nothing but your best.

  2. Great video! Chris and Annalisa you did a wonderful job!

I am a Colorado native and Drew has been a part of my morning ritual for longer than I can remember. Don’t ever leave us Drew!

  3. Great job on that video! Good to see that great journalists are still out there.

I fear for the future of journalism at the same time that I’m thrilled for it. While print is having a bad run of late, network news is on the decline, and consolidation of the media giants threatens to turn cable news into a mouthpeice for the establishment (moreso than usual), where opinion and bias are replacing research and fact.

However, we’re also going through a time where a great array of voices are able to be heard, voices that appraoch topics from more than one angle or point of view. The best journalism is as independent as possible, and passionate aobut the story it has to tell. It is my hope that the spirit of journalism – to comfort the afflicted and to afflict the comfortable – will stay alive.

Consider this: Had the Rocky let you go 20 years ago, would this outlet be there for you? Or the ESPN website?

  4. Drew Soicher goofed – he said he opened up The Denver Post and read Drew Litton’s work there. whoops – should have said the Rocky Mountain News. Otherwise great video!

  5. Really nice work, Annalisa and Chris … I’m a grad student in the JTC department and it makes us all proud to see work like this coming out of the program. Cheers.

  6. Very impressive interview. The ones that I remember best were the drug-alcohol cartoons with Len Bias, John Drew, Pelle Lindbergh, Mercury Morris, “He’ll try anything once”. I did some drug counseling and they were great discussion starters.

The ones on boxing were also very meaningful, because in one or two pictures you identified the painful side of the sport. The USFL cartoons and Colorado Buffalo cartoons when McCartney was coach are also very memorable. You truly do have that gift that Jim Sacamano was talking about. That is the ability to put an entire commentary in a picture.

  7. Great work by Annalisa and Chris. Even though I worked with you for many years, Drew, I still learned a lot about you and your work from this piece. A much-deserved tribute to your amazing body of work.

  8. Drew,

Absolutely agree. Great piece and exceptionally well done! Annalisa and Chris should be very proud! Capturing the content and insight was amazing. A++++

(Inspired by their work, I thought I would add some more thoughts)

    Drew,

I have to tell you that you are one of may favorite cartoonists.Your talent and insight are incredible! You and another one of my favorite cartoonists, Jim Borgman are national treasures.

I drew editorial cartoons in college for the school newspaper and had a passion for it. Still do…But didn’t have the courage; (nor the skill), to do it professionally. But, I have always felt that the editorial cartoon was one of the most important elements of a newspaper. To the comments on the piece, ” a picture is worth a thousand words”. All true. We need to keep this very important profession alive. Its so important! I have daughters in college and in high school and I always tell them to think critically…form your own opinion! I told them, go read the newspaper; and look at the editorial cartoon.. and tell me if you understand what the artist is saying and whether or not you agree with it..(After I get the eye rolls..) the responses have been amazing. Drew, keep it up… the messages are important. We are fortunate and privileged to have a view into your world..and see your work!

PS. I live in Chicago… please take it easy on the Cubbies. So Sad… So very %$#@! sad…But, the day will come !!!!

  9. Amazing work, but I’m not at all surprised! I had the pleasure of teaching both Chris and Annalisa as students in my Intro to Editing class here at CSU, and even in the intro class it was obvious they were both going to go far in their journalism careers!

  10. Annalisa and Chris, GREAT WORK!!! This piece captured the concept of Drew’s work and brings it out to the public in a very convincing fashion. I liked the way thaat you were able to transition from the Q&A to the comments of others and then go back. This really helped to put an emphasis on the importance that Drew’s work has had on people throughout his career. I have been a fan of Drew for many years and am glad that this is out there for others to see.

    Keep up the great work.

    Bryce

  11. Dear Drew,

Great Work (even though my computer kept freezing up at the 11:00 minute mark). Happy you mentioned the Karlis fork cartoon (my personal favorite)

One major surprise was seeing how you looked today. Based on the cartoon of you in the Rocky Mountain News in I think 82 I had you pictured as much thinner. Like a Stan Laurel of Laurel and Hardy fame.

    Still overall great work.

    All the best

    Louis

  12. Drew,

What a great interview you gave. Chris and Annalisa deserve an A+ for the outstanding editing they did making the interview flow so smoothly and telling your story, the story of sports cartooning, and local sports for Denver. The insight you gave about the benefit of reporting and cartooning on the local level being more lucrative than another national level cartoon was illuminating. I did chuckle when the story then directly transitioned to ESPN. I suppose there is an implication there about getting the bills paid.

Your story about the Rockies catchers and the way Helton and Walker stuck up for you after Denny Nagle and the catcher tore you a new one was classic on so many levels… especially the way one ‘toon so deeply penetrated a sports organization, and Helton and Walker, both true to character, stuck up for what was right.

    Congratulations again!

    Mike

  13. Drew–

What a beautifully polished piece of work! I have seen journalism pieces from the local stations in Philly that do not look or sound nearly as solid.

As a CSU alum, I am tickled pink to see that students there are producing such outstanding work. Go Rams!

You mentioning the Rich Karlis cartoon was just the cherry on top of the cake.

  14. Great Interview! I have been a fan since your first day with the Rocky Mountain News. The interview was insightful and the work was top notch!
