Americans and World Cup Soccer

I’m still not quite sure why Americans have failed to embrace soccer. We deny the worlds love affair for the game and yet try to justify watching stupid TV trash like American Ninja Warriors. But I won’t get all preachy. I used to be one of the guys who ripped soccer at every turn. And I was able to do some pretty funny cartoons about it all. But I’ve been converted along the way. I love the nuances and the “poetry in motion” of the game. And I’m looking forward to it all. As long as they leave those @#%&@#@# vuvuzela’s at home!

That said, here’s a hilarious rant by John Oliver about FIFA, the governing board for the game.

  1. You gotta love intelligent people like John Oliver. Nice comment, Drew, you are pretty intelligent yourself. I think Americans are coming around, got to be much more interest for the play the World Cup gets these days here.

  2. For the last two Cups, ratings were better than those for the NBA Finals and World Series…

And those were for games that started mostly in the morning! Imagine what the ratings will be since most of the games will be in the afternoon and early evening!

I can’t wait – I actually like the US chances to get out of the early rounds, and think that this tournament will pick up a few more converts. But, then again, that’s how it’s been for every Cup since 1994: some fun soccer, a few more fans added, excitement built up…Anyone who thinks that the game in America hasn’t gotten bigger hasn’t been paying attention.

Although, I have to admit – I kinda like Ninja Warrior.

  3. Drew,

Soccer was played for decades before football or baseball or basketball. And leave it to the Americans to play soccer on ice in something called hockey? Its the worlds game and we are late to the party. Will I watch the games. Probably not, unless there is a riot in the stands. then abc nbc and cbs will show the riot and not the game.

Its like watching car races for the wrecks I guess. Besides the CWS starts this weekend and the weather in the big O is wonderful. Its time to go out and ride.

Strive for excellence, nothing but your best.

    Gene
