boras

Today you’ll hear all about Stephen Strasburg, the phenom pitcher sure to go to the Washington Nationals with the first pick in the MLB draft. You’ll hear details about his agent, the notorious Scott Boras and how he plans to wrangle away a $50 million contract for a kid who hasn’t thrown a pitch in the majors (or minors for that matter). This is just my depiction of one small pest (Boras) who wrecks havoc in a big way.

Thanks for the feedback on At the Crossroads: Part 1 Your words of encouragement and your great ideas and input have been most welcome. Mostly I’m glad that some of you shared your own experience with life at the crossroads. I’ll be back here tomorrow with some more thoughts and cartoons.

The Madness of it all
We are in the midst of a technological Tsunami. Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, iPhones, it’s really never ending. Which, of course, makes fun material for a cartoonist. I’ll be finishing up my time here in Las Vegas at the international licensing expo. I’ve met some really incredible people here and I’ve been able to make, what I hope will be, some lasting contacts and friendships.
Q. Are you ready to write off the Rockies season? Let me know what you think.

It all starts early
We live in the age of the trophy child. They are kids who are brought up to believe that everything they do is good and worthy of praise and special treatment. Kids follow by example. This cartoon was just a fun way to point out the messiness that comes with coddling.

Clint Was Class
If you’re looking for the real reason Clint Hurdle lost his job, this cartoon, an old one from my days at the Rocky, pretty much spells it out. Sure , we can blame the Monfort’s (as I’ve been known to do more than a few times) but looking at the wrecking ball of this current economy, I think I’ll not point the finger today. Sure, The Monforts can’t compete with the likes of the Yankees or Red Sox but, really, who can? Until baseball puts in a salary cap to even the playing field, great guys like Clint Hurdle get pushed out the door. Here’s my wish. That Hurdle inks a deal with one of the teams with deep pockets. And then wins a World Series or two. Good luck Skipper. There was none finer.

Today’s View From the Bull Pen

The odds aren't good. Simply put waiting for an NBA player to make a free throw is a bit like waiting for the Cubs to win the World Series. It just ain't gonna happen. At least in our lifetimes. It reminds me of one of my favorite stories. Legendary basketball coach Don Haskins, all 250 plus pounds of him, had a player who apparently thought a bit highly of himself and didn't find his deficiency at the free throw line to be that big of a deal. Haskins challenged him to a free throw contest and let the kid go first. The kid hit a couple out of 10 or so and proudly handed old man Haskins the ball. After the coach hit his 100th in a row without a miss the kid learned his lesson. Don't argue with the Bear. And learn to shoot free throws.

There isn't a way to leave comments in the Bull Pen (that I've found yet) so please feel free to leave your comments under the latest cartoon that I post.
