This is going to be a huge day drawing wise for me. This is the first of 3 Manning cartoons I’ll be doing.

This one is for Universal Press (my syndicate). Feel free to start leaving your thoughts on this GIGANTIC story…

Dispatches From the Drawing Board

  • Peyton being unceremoniously dumped is a metaphor of all that is wrong with pro football.
  • I mean he didn’t even get a gold watch on his way out the door.
  • That said, he really should retire, while he still can. After all, your health is everything.
  • Unless, of course you happen to be a cartoonist. Here’s a story I’m pondering about my friend, Tony Auth
  • How many cartoonists does it take to make people laugh.
  • None. They all lost their jobs.

As the BountyGate scandal story continues to dominate the nation’s sports I thought his would be a great chance to show you different takes on the same topic. The cartoon below was drawn for Universal Press syndicate and went out nationally a little while ago.

This black and white cartoon was an “outtake” from a batch I sent the Chicago Tribune on Friday afternoon. I liked the premise and in hindsight it might have been a better image than the one I posted earlier this morning and that was published in Saturday’s Tribune. I kept it in it’s pre-color form since it didn’t publish.

Dispatches from the Drawing Board:

  • Here’s the cartoon I did for the Chicago Tribune regarding the whole Saints “BountyGate” debacle. This one was personally painful for me considering I root for the Saints on Sundays in the fall.
  • I’m not done on this subject. I’ll draw another one today for Universal Press (my syndicate) and I want to show you one I didn’t finish for the Tribune before I changed directions on it. So be sure to toon back in throughout the day for more stuff.
  • I’m looking into a service where you can get my cartoons via e-mail every time I post one. I’ll let you know. I do enjoy you stopping by here on the blog though. We’ve really become a cool little community here. I rather like that. Which reminds me…
  • Go, Gene, go!

Today’s View From the Bull Pen

The odds aren't good. Simply put waiting for an NBA player to make a free throw is a bit like waiting for the Cubs to win the World Series. It just ain't gonna happen. At least in our lifetimes. It reminds me of one of my favorite stories. Legendary basketball coach Don Haskins, all 250 plus pounds of him, had a player who apparently thought a bit highly of himself and didn't find his deficiency at the free throw line to be that big of a deal. Haskins challenged him to a free throw contest and let the kid go first. The kid hit a couple out of 10 or so and proudly handed old man Haskins the ball. After the coach hit his 100th in a row without a miss the kid learned his lesson. Don't argue with the Bear. And learn to shoot free throws.

There isn't a way to leave comments in the Bull Pen (that I've found yet) so please feel free to leave your comments under the latest cartoon that I post.
