I remember a time when I used to love the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The intensity. The excellence of play “kicked up a notch”.
Now it’s just a bunch of brawls to the walls, mayhem and madness. Sick and sicker. I dunno. It’s like the league condones the level of violence these playoffs have escalated to. I can’t watch it. It makes me nauseous. I think I’m about to take baseball a bit more seriously.

The Goon Factory. That’s what the NHL has become. This years Stanley cup Playoffs are the most violent, pentalty scarred playoffs in the leagues history. When will it stop? When it’s too late.
From the New Jersey Star Ledger:
USA Today reports the 2012 playoffs are the NHL’s chippiest in the past six years, with 724 penalty minutes called through the first 19 games
Some would argue that Game 3 of the Penguins-Flyers series and Game 2 of the Rangers-Senators series resembled more of a circus-like atmosphere that you would see in Slapshot instead of an NHL playoff game.
During Sunday’s Pittsburgh-Philadelphia game, there were 158 penalty minutes, including 72 in the first period. Stars such as Sidney Crosby and Claude Giroux fought each other. Pittsburgh’s Arron Asham took his stick and cross-checked Brayden Schenn in the throat and then followed it up with a punch to the back of the head while the Flyers’ forward was laying face down on the ice. Later in the game, Pittsburgh’s James Neal delivered a late hit on Sean Couturier and went head-hunting on Giroux. Asham and Neal now have disciplinary hearings with the league.
Dispatches from the Drawing Board
- This cartoon is from this weekends Chicago Tribune. The Blackhawks are raising ticket prices, which , of course, is never very popular.
- Kentucky vs. Kansas should be great fun. I’m rooting for the little bird!
- Looking forward to a more creative week. I spent last week teaching for Art Reach, kids from age 5 to 14. It takes me out of the “zone” if you will and makes it a little more of a challenge to just “chill” and draw funny pictures.
- So give me your predictions on tomorrow nights big grand finale!

Here’s another cartoon on the Historic Stanley Cup Victory for Boston. A remarkable win for a remarkable team. seems like all for Vancouver is full of Thugs. Nice way to showcase sportsmanship Canuts fans.
This drawing is a bit of a grand experiment for me. Last nights cartoon featuring the Ride of Paul Revere took me several hours to pencil, ink and colorize. This one, which I think I like better, about 45 minutes if that. It may be time for me to shift the paradigm on how I do sports cartoons. I think the immediacy of getting something up might need to supersede my desire for art that looks more polished. It might be time for me to rethink the whole way I approach the site and the cartoons I do here. Perhaps short and simple and quick is the way to go, basically jumping on every big sports story I can right after it occurs, getting something posted within an hour after it’s finished. It might mean doing several “quick” cartoons a day at times. Just thinking out loud . I sure would love to know what you think, as always.
A brief note on the Zazzle store: for the second time Zazzle has chosen to remove content from my store that they deem a conflict with trademarks of professional sports. I never had any such problem with the Rocky Mountain News nor Chicago Tribune or ESPN.com for that. In any case it means my ability to resell prints on Zazzle might need to be rethought as well.
