Trevor Bayne wins the Daytona 500, one day after turning 20. There’s no truth to the rumor that he only had a learners permit and still has to pass a drivers test. Somehow I think driving 500 miles in an environment with more traffic jams than an LA freeway and more accidents than your average carnival bumper car ride probably qualifies the kid. The only thing about it is, if you win the 500 as a 20 year old, is it really all downhill from there? I mean it took Dale Earnhardt 20 years to finally win at Daytona didn’t it?
Did you watch the race, the All-star game or none of the above? I had to do a bit of both since ESPN wanted me to draw off of one or the other. And since I practically fell asleep during the NBA All-Star game it was Daytona or bust. With topics such as these I’m reminded why I used to take vacation this time of year when I was at the Rocky Mountain News. Yawn. Guess it’s another cup of coffee for me.

A long, long time ago…
I can still remember
How that music used to make me smile.
And I knew if I had my chance
That I could make those people dance
And, maybe, they’d be happy for a while.
But February made me shiver
With every paper I’d deliver.
Bad news on the doorstep;
I couldn’t take one more step.
I can’t remember if I cried
When I read about his widowed bride,
But something touched me deep inside
The day the music died.

It’s till so hard to believe it’s been ten years since we said goodbye to Dale Earnhardt. I still remember calling my brother, Allan, who was a big Earnhardt fan. He didn’t know that Earnhardt had lost his life that afternoon since the Daytona 500 broadcast had signed off before anyone knew. I happened to catch the news flash on ESPN. Stunned, I immediately called my brother, and after collecting our thoughts, I hung up and called The Rocky’s Sunday Sports Editor, Mike Bialis, who made room for this cartoon on Monday morning.

So NASCAR updated it’s scoring system. I always thought the round by round scoring system worked.
Talk about Road rage…
I doubt I’ll really watch the Pro Bowl. Maybe the NHL all star game. Naw. I think it’s time for my recorded Green Hornet episodes to play while I draw away. Then again. I really want to watch them.
So maybe it’s just Bob Wills, Nat King Cole and Rush from the itunes library.
I’m busy finishing up a freelance job and working away on our special Sooper Sunday Madness animation episode. Next week will be crazy fun. Everyone have a great weekend as we get ready for da Sooper Bowl!

The NASCAR Hall of Fame opens it’s doors this week in North Carolina. The venue is actually state of the art and from the online pix I’ve seen is really impressive. Yet it seems so wrong. I think the Hall of Fame should really have looked more like this cartoon. This cartoon is lovingly dedicated to my brother Alan, a long time NASCAR fan. If he’s reading this the prints are in on their way. Finally.
The next few days will be super busy as I work on art for Mile High Sports Magazine and the Rockies magazine. I might need to find a few golden oldies to post for Thursday and Friday. I’ll make them topical but if you have one you remember from the past you want me to post feel free to leave some suggestions. If we get a lot of different ones that’s cool. I’ll post them in waves and find a boat in the Caribbean to spend the summer on. Just kidding. But it sure sounds like a great idea doesn’t it. Hey we could all go on a Drew Cruise! Now that’s an idea.
