This Soccer cartoon will always be one of my favorites. It’s a good day for a cartoonist when he or she can convey their sentiments without words. And if it ends up on a refrigerator somewhere, now that’s a perfect day.

So the big kickoff is Saturday. I’ll be doing a cartoon as soon as I can after the USA match-up with England for ESPN.com. And I’m turning over a new leaf. (gulp). From here on I treat soccer with some respect. I deserves it. It’s time. And to be honest, I’ll gladly take 90 minutes of watching a bunch of guys kicking a ball around a green pasture over the tragic images coming out of the Gulf. Those break my heart.

This is another in a series of World Cup cartoons that I’ve drawn in years gone by. I’m going to do World Cup cartoons this year with an open mind but it’s only fair to show a few from the past. I have one last oldie soccer cartoon coming before this weekends big kickoff.

I told you last week that I’m going to approach this years World Cup with an open mind. I’m planning on doing a few more cartoons on the Cup than I have before. But in the spirit of full disclosure I think it’s only fair that you see some of my previous cartoons on soccer. Feel free to vent or give me a high five. I like those better.

ESPN cartoons I’ve got two new ones on ESPN today. Take a look! And please leave a comment or two. Every comment there helps me a lot!

Soccer: So here’s the deal…
We’re about to be inundated with World Cup Soccer, and, yes, I will be doing some Cup stuff. And I’ll will do my best not to be a condescending about it all. I want to embrace it with new vigor and an open mind. But…It’s also fair for me to come clean about my sordid past when it comes to soccer cartoons. Here’s one that kind of says how i have felt watching soccer in the past. Let me know what you think about soccer and the World Cup. Or about how much this cartoon makes you a little peeved. That’s cool too.

Today’s View From the Bull Pen

The odds aren't good. Simply put waiting for an NBA player to make a free throw is a bit like waiting for the Cubs to win the World Series. It just ain't gonna happen. At least in our lifetimes. It reminds me of one of my favorite stories. Legendary basketball coach Don Haskins, all 250 plus pounds of him, had a player who apparently thought a bit highly of himself and didn't find his deficiency at the free throw line to be that big of a deal. Haskins challenged him to a free throw contest and let the kid go first. The kid hit a couple out of 10 or so and proudly handed old man Haskins the ball. After the coach hit his 100th in a row without a miss the kid learned his lesson. Don't argue with the Bear. And learn to shoot free throws.

There isn't a way to leave comments in the Bull Pen (that I've found yet) so please feel free to leave your comments under the latest cartoon that I post.
