NFL Training Camps Open

NFL camps have open all over the league this weekend. It always makes for good cartoon fodder and I’ll be doing a fair share of Training Camp cartoons in the days and weeks to come. This one was in this weekend’s Chicago Tribune. It looks like Jay Cutler has finally met his match.

The Broncos got off to a rough start on Sunday with Knowshon Moreno and Correll Buckhalter both going down with injuries. I sometimes wonder if the new NFL pushes these guys a bit beyond what their bodies can take. Years ago the season ended in January and we didn’t hear from the players again until July for training camp. Sure, some guys came in out of shape but that, after all, was why they held training camp to begin with. Now players finish in February, start daily workouts immediately and show up for umpteen mini-camps during the off-season. Is it all really necessary? And to what end? Dez Bryant in Dalls is out for 6 weeks. Moreno for 3 to 4. And this is before they even play a meaningless preseason game. What do you think? Do you agree or have another thought. Feel free to share.

Speaking of Retirements…

I couldn’t resist this fun poke at Brett Favre. It had to be done. As training camp opens I’ll be drawing you some updates from around the league. That’s always a lot of fun. From the mess in Cincinnati to the daily Tebow watch. Oh it’s good to be back at the drawing board.

The LeBron Let down

My cartoon for this weekends Chicago Tribune. And, now, I promise, I’ll leave LeBron alone for awhile. The scene they made in Miami when to welcome LeBron to the team made me physically ill. If that’s the level of hero worship we’ve come to then maybe it’s time to go watch some little league games.

Time to go Wild for World Cup

Are you beginning to catch a bit of the fever that has hit the U.S. lately? Fans are flocking to the sports bars in droves to catch the excitement of the World Cup. And, ya know, it feels pretty good. We could certainly stand a pick-me-up these days. Between the sour economy and the mess in the Gulf, life has become a bit of a downer. I say embrace the whole thing with the same crazed giddiness found around the rest of the world. Grab your vuvuzelas and go Bonkers. It’ll do us all some good.

The Jokers Wild: World Cup Referees

One of the worst calls in the history of sports cost the USA a win in it’s match yesterday with Slovenia. Just like the missed call a few weeks ago by an umpire who cost a pitcher a perfect game, the referee at the World Cup negated a historic comeback by team USA after being down 2-0 in their 2nd game of the tournament. Ineptness robbed sports of another memorable moment.
I realize the use of real people to make judgment calls in any aspect of life is open to mistakes it’s a shame that it seems to steal pieces of history in the process. I’m reminded of the USSR-USA basketball fiasco during the 1972 Olympics that cost the US a gold medal. The whole thing stank of Politics. I think that same thing happened Friday against Slovenia. It’s unfortunate that at a time when more Americans are willing to embrace the World Cup that a call like the one on Friday kills whatever enthusiam they have managed to muster.

Cutler’s Quandry

I did this for the Chicago Tribune on Saturday. Cutler apparently is “excited” about the new Mike Martz offense that the Bears will run this season. The truth is he won’t be too thrilled about it if he throws 26 interceptions like he did last year. 26 more reasons to be glad he’s gone and the Broncos drafted Tim Tebow.

sorrycharlie

Latest Chicago Tribune Cartoon
For all of the Notre Dame fans out there. Sorry, Charlie. He’s gone. And don’t be too surprised to see Mike Shanahan’s name pop up on the Irish look list.

Calendars!
Thanks to everyone who ordered a calendar. I’ll be posting reminders but I’ve added a button in the sidebar that can take you right to the order page.

Site Changes
You’ll notice some changes to the site. I’ve taken the ads off so that i cn fill the sidebars with more content links. I’ll also be adding a storefront on the site to accommodate some new merchandise in 2010, including t-shirts, books, prints and originals. I’ll also be adding a commission button because in 2010 I’ll be available to draw customized cartoons for you and your special occasion. Sounds like fun!
