A Holiday special Broncos toon from Mile High Sports

Be sure to scroll down for the punchline!

I thought this would be a fun cartoon to leave you with for the weekend. It’s featured in the September issue of Mile High Sports magazine which is available now throughout the Denver Metro area. Be sure to pick up a copy. This one might go over well taped on the fridge! Since so many of us take off Friday and Monday over the labor day holiday (not me personally but some of you lucky ducks do) I thought this might tide us through until next Tuesday when I return to drawing live. I’ll have an ESPN cartoon up this weekend as well over on ESPN.com so check back for that one. And I might have something for the CU-CSU game but I’m not sure yet. One good way to know if I post something new is to subscribe to my RSS feed. Have a great Labor Day weekend and be safe!

Broncos: Minefield ahead

So far the Broncos have navigated the mounting injury issues of the preseason fairly well. Yet they seem but one step away from impending disaster. Knowshon Moreno is only a reported 80% healthy and the bigger issue remains how long Ryan Clady will sit and if the loss of Elvis Dumervil will finally catch up with the Broncos. Overall it’s made for a pretty nerve wrecking training camp.

Dis ‘n Dat

Thanks for the support here on the blog. I’m gearing up for the start of the football season with some fun things right around the corner. It’s been a busy few weeks with trips to ESPN and to NYC. I’m not used to        that much travel and it’s an adjustment returning to the drawing board.

I’m trying to find room in my schedule as well for more Broncos cartoons, which I love to draw. The problem is, other than the ones I do for 9News, I don’t get paid to do them anymore. My current schedule is  full of projects (crazy full at times) that pay the bills. Trying to find the time and creative energy to continue to draw more Broncos cartoons is a dilemma I’ve been wrestling with for some time. I’m doing the best I can in this new life after the Rocky Mountain News. I know how some of you are disappointed and frustrated there aren’t more local Colorado cartoons here. I’m with you on that. I’d love to draw all Denver cartoons every day of the week. But I have to make a living too. I’ve toyed with some kind of pay plan for awhile. 1000 people giving anywhere from $10.00 to 25.00 a year could add up quickly. But that just doesn’t seem right to ask you all for money, especially given these tough times. So please be patient with me. I’ll find a solution somehow. But please know your readership means the world to me.

I’ll continue to do all that I can to earn it each and every day.

NFL Challenges

Rule Changes. This off-season was full of rule changes, one of which played havoc with the Colts hurry up offense this weekend. It seems as though officials have even been calling preseason games super close. It will probably loosen up once the season starts.

That time of Year

Observations from the Broncos vs. Steelers preseason game:

1. Tebow looked good
2. Brady Quinn is in trouble
3. Did I say Tim Tebow looked good.

Bowden: It was time

Sometimes it’s hard to know when “it’s time”. But Florida State head coach Bobby Bowden didn’t and apparently still doesn’t. And it made for an awkward exit from a program he helped build. It’s too bad, but coaches sometimes just become outdated. Every generation is different than the one before it. How Joe Paterno remains at Penn State is beyond me. But Joe really should go as well. It’s just part of the business. Kids become more difficult to relate to as time wears on.

I’ve got some fun illustrations to a must read column on Graduation Rates in college Athletics over on ESPN.com. Check it out here.

Fantasy Football Drafts Ahead

It won’t be long before many of us hold our fantasy football drafts. I often wonder why I bother to draft. It always seems to turn out the same way. So this cartoon came to me as a reminder. Fantasy football is big business. No wonder when they can manage to entice guys like me for another year of futile frustration. Fun. But futile.

Lusters Last Stand

Athletes often believe they are above the law, above the people who pay tickets to see them. Egos are massive, often times they are pandered to at every juncture of their lives. Such is the case with Roger Clemens. Too many people have bowed to him, worshiped him and set him on a pedestal. Even his current counsel for this very serious indictment has led him to believe he is above the law. That he can say and do anything he wishes. It will be Clemens undoing. He is trapped now in a situation that I still don’t think he fully understands. He could do jail time. Serious jail time. And yet he denies and continue to deny any wrong doing. It’s hard to watch. And it draws a parallel to Custer’s tragic moment in history.

Back to School: Another Take

I simply had to do another back to school cartoon. It’s such a great topic. I hope you don’t mind me taking another diversion from the usual sports topic. I think this is such a universal theme that a lot of you with kids can relate.

The NFL Preseason Bites

Great to be back from my trip to the ESPN headquarters. It was a blast. I met some great people, rested in the shade of the largest satellite dish I’ve ever seen and just missed having Arnold Palmer’s with Arnold Palmer. So it was quite a trip.

Injuries have plagued the Broncos as well as many other NFL teams this preseason. I had fun drawing this take off on Jaws, one of my favorite summer movies.
