Exercise tips from Mile High Sports Magazine.

This cartoon is out now at the news stands and bookstores in the Denver Metro area. It looks so much prettier in print. So rush now and buy a copy!

I need your help!
I’m still stunned by the decision by the Denver Post to cut 21 comic strips on Monday. Newspapers are in the midst of incredible turmoil right now. But there comes a time when readers (those who still read papers ) have to stand up for the content they enjoy or lose it forever. I urge you today to call or e-mail, or write a letter to the Post. Let them know that comics are important and you love reading them and you want the strips reinstated. Or we stand to lose an American institution: the comic strip. Thanks.

Now about that header
I’m sure by now you’re growing weary of my tinkering. I know I am. I just want to get down to getting you great content everyday. But I also want this site to have some pop and sizzle and some fun branding. The start of the branding can’t take place until I settle on the title header at the top (the thing with the football field). So again I need some feedback. Do you like it, do you not like it and if so, why. it’d be a big help. Thanks.

One Year Ago Today

Drewfinalcartoon

It is so hard to believe it’s been a year since we waved goodbye to The Rocky. There’s a gathering of Rocky staff members tomorrow night. I won’t be there. It’s still just too hard. We remain like family. That’s one of the things that always endeared me to the Rocky. Everyone worked together for the greater good.
The final days of a business about to close it’s doors is a very strange journey. Some of you know what I mean. So I won’t get all maudlin here. I thought I’d just share a few highlights of my time there.

September 1982 I joined the Rocky as it’s first (and last ) sports editorial cartoonist.
December 1982 Get to do a full page drawing of the Rocky sports staff. No one ever sees it as the Rocky halts for a day due to the Blizzard of 82.
February 1983 I get to play broom hockey at McNichols with the San Diego Chicken. I swear.
December 1984 Rich Karlis hits uprights, fork cartoon follows.
January 1987 Broncos beat Browns to go to the Super Bowl. Dad attends first NFL game ever. The Super Bowl.
dad
February 1987 First anthology of cartoons is published.
June 1997 Avalanche win the Stanley Cup
September 1997 Second anthology of cartoons is printed
January 1998 Broncos win the Super Bowl. Hell freezes over and I finally get to draw a Broncos win cartoon.
January 1999 They do it again.
April 1999 The worst day ever at the Rocky. Columbine. Elway retires the very next week.
April 2000 The photo staff at the Rocky win the Pulitzer for it’s Columbine photos
June 2004 My 3rd anthology is printed, this time an homage to John Elway.
Rocktober 2008 Rocks go to the World Series!!!
February 2009 We stop the presses

Now I ask you. Any great memories of your favorite paper?

Wouldja pummel me if I did it again?

Hey Everyone. Been doing some more contemplating. I’m really trying to set the right tone for this blog moving forward. Though I love the navigation and the look someone pointed out to me “it doesn’t seem like a sports blog”. And I’m starting to agree. I’m game for another brief makeover if you can stand it. Nothing radical, if anything, a bit more toned down. Let me know if don’t agree. I’m always all ears. And I promise I’ll stop fiddling with it all the time. At least for a while anyway. (Progress, Progress)

When you know life is unfair

High School sports
Maybe it’s just me, or the market I live in (Denver) but it pains me to see so little importance and air time given to high school sports. I wish, sometimes, the coverage was the other way around.

Comments and critiques
I realize I have foisted a tremendous amount of new stuff here on the site all at once. But it’s been almost a year since the loss of the Rocky Mountain News and almost that long for this blog. I felt like it needed some refreshing here. Feel free to let me know what you like and don’t like about the changes here. I want to make this place a blast for you to come to!

I want a great reader experience here on the site. A place where you can go during the day to have a little fun. I’ll be adding some more things in the coming days.

Thanks,

MLK Day: A way to Remember…

homeless

A Day to Remember
Count myself among the millions who admired Dr Martin Luther King. His march to freedom has brought us to a place in history where it is possible for us to have the first African American President. Today, as we pause to remember all that Dr. King did for the racial divides in our country, let us also turn or thoughts and prayers and aid to the people of Haiti. If you feel so inclined, I’ve added a donate widget in the sidebar (a beautiful poster drawn by animation director Theodore Ushev) that takes you to the Red Cross site to contribute to the task of helping those who are truly hurting in an impoverished country in the midst of unfathomable tragedy. This is not a political plea. I know the economy is bad, and we are seeing a lot about this event on our TV’s and radios, but perhaps now is the most important time in our lives to reach down and share our bountiful blessings with those in need. My wife and I will be giving today for this just cause. I ask for your consideration as well, in honor of MLK.

Thanks and have a great day.

Bears staff changes and a Drew Posting change(for a few weeks)

stoogesstaff

Da Bears
The Bears coaching staff went through some serious makeover work last week in this cartoon I did for the Chicago Tribune. It’s quite a mess that Mr. Cutler has gotten himself into.
A Cartoon Posting change for a few weeks
I’m going to change my posting schedule here for just a few weeks . I’ve been posting here 5 days a week since leaving the Rocky last February. For the next few weeks I’m going to post just M-W-F. Don’t worry. This isn’t a permanent change. I just want a chance to work on a web comic I’m playing with as well as some other concepts for the coming year and to do some marketing for my creative business Littoonz Studios without the daily deadline of sports cartoons. I’m asking all of you, please, to bear with me for a few weeks, to keep supporting the site by coming back daily or every other day at least. And I ask all of you as well, to tell a friend or two about the cartoons here and encourage them to give the site a try. The more the merrier.
I’m also asking you to take part in the poll questions below to help me evaluate the site and to bring you more of the content you want to read. Thanks everybody!!

Drew in review 2009

2009: Unforgettable
For me, 2009 will always be remembered as the year a great newspaper died. The Rocky Mountain News had been a part of the Colorado landscape for 150 years until it’s closing in February. It set my life and career onto a new path, drawing cartoons for this blog and for places like 9News, the Chicago Tribune, United Media syndicate and The great Guadalupe County Communicator in Santa Rosa, New Mexico. I hope you enjoy this year in review piece I put together. It will be featured in the January issue of Mile High Sports Magazine on news stands next week.

I’ll have a new cartoon on Saturday.

Drew News: New comic on RMI.com & a Sakic cartoon on the way

squarerhinonewestone

A few updates
I’ve had several requests to do a Joe Sakic tribute cartoon which I’d love to do. He more than deserves that. I didn’t know Joe very well but we attended the same church years ago. I can still remember a Christmas eve service where we found ourselves seated directly behind Joe and his family. Somehow his toddler managed to find a way to crawl underneath Joe’s chair to our row right behind him. We laughed as we handed his son back to him. It was a great moment of levity in the midst of this solemn scared service. Anyway, please give me the weekend to get something new up in honor of Joe. I’m a littel weary from a long week. So check in Monday or even Sunday night for my tribute.

New Comic
Today I have started to draw an exclusive cartoon for the new local online news website RockyMountainIndependent.com. It will be featured every Friday and will be different from what I do here. It can be best described as a Colorado cultural comic about everything indigenous to the state. Be see for yourself at http://www.rockymountainindependent.com
