Happy Hockeytober

hockeytober

And on to nAvember…

There’s nothing more that can be said about the start the Avalanche have had so far this season. They set a franchise record last night for the number of wins in October. So this cartoon was a natural. I’m hoping the Avs can keep it up. I love drawing hockey.

Stay safe out there. The snow that Colorado is enjoying is a bit slippery you know.

NHL: It’s Never too Early

NHL and The Colorado Avalanche

It’s never too early to start hoping. The Avs have started quickly and look much improved. Enough to make the playoffs and a run to the Cup? Let’s catch the fever before it’s too late. I love doing NHL cartoons because Hockey fans are the most loyal in all of sports. And Avalanche fans are even better.

Super Joe and a New Comic on AHJL

sakicsalute

Here, by special request, is my Salute to Super Joe Sakic. Joe, it’s been an honor to draw you, Sir. And thanks to all the readers who encouraged me to draw this. It needed to be done.

Today I’m on Andrew Hudson’s Jobs List site with a special cartoon created just for his site. It will be about job hunting and should be great fun. Andrew also did a really nice write-up about me as well. Thanks, Andrew! Andrew Hudson was the former Press Secretary to Denver Mayor Wellington Webb, and one heck of a jazz musician. If your are in the job market, there simply is no better site than Andrew’s. See it by clicking on http://andrewhudsonsjobslist.com

Sakic was special
Here’s my favorite cartoon featuring Joe Sakic, done right after the Avalanche won their first Stanley Cup. I love the fact that it contains both Sakic and Elway.

drew0413blog2

Thanks to Scott and Alfred from 104.3 the Fan
A big thanks goes out to Scott Hastings and Alfred Williams for having me on their show this afternoon to talk about www.drewlliton.com, 9News, inDenverTimes, and the future ahead. Be sure to check out their new website at http://www.fm1043thefan.com/ and you can hear the whole interview at http://www.fm1043thefan.com/

Life after the Rocky has been anything but predictable. I’m committed to trying to make this blog work, to building a special community for sports fans and make it so I can earn a living here doing what I love to do. There are challenges ahead, no doubt ,but I’m more excited than ever before to meet those obstacles head on and to reach for the dreams I’ve had since I first set out to be a cartoonist. Thanks also to Lynda Hanshaw for reaching out to me and offering her expertise to help build a business model for all of this. Lynda is an amazingly talented wedding photographer (she shot our wedding in 2006) and you can see her work at http://www.lyndahanshaw.com

The length of those NBA and NHL seasons

drew0413091

It’s been a Long, long winter
And now it’s time for 6 more months of the NHL and NBA playoffs. Why, oh, why do the seasons have to drag on so long? We all know the answer to that. It’s the money. It’s always about the money. It’s just a shame that we prolong the NHL season so long the ice starts to melt in arenas and the NBA lasts until the all-star break in baseball. It used to be we could define our seasons by the sports that accompanied them. I gotta tell you, I miss those days.

Cartoon Caption contest
Don’t forget the Cartoon caption contest about the Nuggets. Keep those ideas coming. We’re getting great response to it and I’m planning to start some other contests in the months ahead. If you are on Twitter, please do me a favor and start to twitter this blog. The more pepole we have in our community the better the community is.

Elway Covets the Cup

elway-sakic

I usually work today for tomorrow, which does really strange things to your central nervous system. Deadlines are tight. The closer you get to it the faster and louder the heart pounds. The secret is quieting the sucker long enough to get an idea to seep through. This cartoon was drawn right after the Colorado Avalanche captured its first Stanley Cup and a year before John Elway would hoist his first Lombardi Trophy. I had the idea a few weeks before the Avalanche clinched the championship which absolutely NEVER happens. I could hardly wait to draw it for publication. One of the prints hangs on Joe Sakic’s wall. It’s drawn in pen and ink and then watercolored.
