Drew in review 2009

2009: Unforgettable
For me, 2009 will always be remembered as the year a great newspaper died. The Rocky Mountain News had been a part of the Colorado landscape for 150 years until it’s closing in February. It set my life and career onto a new path, drawing cartoons for this blog and for places like 9News, the Chicago Tribune, United Media syndicate and The great Guadalupe County Communicator in Santa Rosa, New Mexico. I hope you enjoy this year in review piece I put together. It will be featured in the January issue of Mile High Sports Magazine on news stands next week.

I’ll have a new cartoon on Saturday.

Unfortunately I also know what loss will be in 2009 Drew. Today is my last day at my job. I am getting laid off from my place of employment due to whatever reasons management sees fit. I have been a good, loyal, and understanding associate who put in overtime and Saturdays to be recognized, but they(management) could not keep me. It is very sad to be leaving all the relationships that I made with other associates and friends along this journey. I am cut very deep today and will not get over this for awhile. I feel lost and hurt right now, but most of all unsure of where I am going to get money to pay our mortgage and bills???
Have a great New Year Drew, I will still post from home or when I get my new job hopefully soon( I have nothing lined up but am looking).

    Happy New Year Drew!

I’ve always loved your “Year in Review” cartoons, Drew!
This one is great, although I have to admit I’m a little disappointed to not see a tribute to “Super Joe” Sakic’s retirement included.
He was the face of the franchise and it’s always big news when a player of his caliber hangs up his skates.
Happy New Year and I hope you 2010 is a less whirlwind year for you!
Also, good luck to you too, Matty G…
That’s a very difficult position to be in and I hope that you find something soon.

  6. Drew says:

    Matty,

My heart goes out to you. Losing a job is a very painful experience but it can be, in the long run, one in which we find new ways to grow and change. Take your time to grieve. That’s important. Count your blessings. And know you aren’t in this alone. We’re all pulling for you!

  7. Drew says:

    Christine,
You’re so right! Super Joe was, well, Super Joe! My bad for leaving it off.

  8. gene says:

    GMFO,
I am sorry to hear about your loss, Matty.
The same thing happened to me back in March, I really got frustrated looking for work and decided to go back to school and try a different profession. Made the deans list and am back plowing a new trail.
    YOU can do it matty.
we are with you, very step of the way.
    Gene

  9. Matty G says:

Thank you all so much for your outpouring of support. Everyone be safe tonight and Happy New Year!!!!
