One of the worst calls in the history of sports cost the USA a win in it’s match yesterday with Slovenia. Just like the missed call a few weeks ago by an umpire who cost a pitcher a perfect game, the referee at the World Cup negated a historic comeback by team USA after being down 2-0 in their 2nd game of the tournament. Ineptness robbed sports of another memorable moment.
I realize the use of real people to make judgment calls in any aspect of life is open to mistakes it’s a shame that it seems to steal pieces of history in the process. I’m reminded of the USSR-USA basketball fiasco during the 1972 Olympics that cost the US a gold medal. The whole thing stank of Politics. I think that same thing happened Friday against Slovenia. It’s unfortunate that at a time when more Americans are willing to embrace the World Cup that a call like the one on Friday kills whatever enthusiam they have managed to muster.

    RIDICULOUS

the standard of reffing is terrible in this world cup not just the US game

  2. Chris says:

The main Problem here is the FIFA. Since around 20 Years they won`t use Review Assistant to clear some Scenes like Offside and so on.

On the other Hand, at a WC the best Refs should work and not Refs from all over the World that arent at the Level that around 500 European Refs have. Sad but true.

  3. good ol' george says:

You should’ve drawn Uncle Sam showing the ref another finger instead, but this is a family website.
    Still….Go USA!

    GMFO-
referee problems are a world wide plague- the call was made and no one knows what the call was about. Some said it was an offisides penalty- but replays show that was not the case. what ever- the US is still in contention for the cup- let the games begin-
strive for excellence, nothing but your best.

The World Cup. The gifts that keep on giving.

Lets see. England gave the USA a gift of a goal off the hands of their goalie. England and Slovania got a gift from the referee by disallowing the goal. Then England returned the gift in a sense by playing to a 0-0 tie.

Where will the next gift come from? Who will benefit? This is starting to look less like elite soccer and more like a “Treasure Hunt”

I know South Africa worked really hard to reduce crime in anticipation of all the visitors this summer. They just forgot to deal with the crimes INSIDE the stadium.

  7. stanbob says:

FIFA is one of the most corrupt agencies in sports. Anyone remember the ref jobbing Ireland against France last summer in qualifying?

Today’s View From the Bull Pen

The odds aren't good. Simply put waiting for an NBA player to make a free throw is a bit like waiting for the Cubs to win the World Series. It just ain't gonna happen. At least in our lifetimes. It reminds me of one of my favorite stories. Legendary basketball coach Don Haskins, all 250 plus pounds of him, had a player who apparently thought a bit highly of himself and didn't find his deficiency at the free throw line to be that big of a deal. Haskins challenged him to a free throw contest and let the kid go first. The kid hit a couple out of 10 or so and proudly handed old man Haskins the ball. After the coach hit his 100th in a row without a miss the kid learned his lesson. Don't argue with the Bear. And learn to shoot free throws.

There isn't a way to leave comments in the Bull Pen (that I've found yet) so please feel free to leave your comments under the latest cartoon that I post.
