The “investment” that these teams make in their players requires them to ask for more out of them. Football, and I hate to say this, is a business. Its not what have you done, its what have you done lately. And by lately that could mean the last quarter. The players have also invested a bunch in themselves as well. There ability to run and throw the ball and tackle is all they have, to sell. The nfl is only 32 teams. that means 32 starting q.b.’s, 32 centers, 32 left tackles. That is a pretty competitive market.
The players get pitted against each other, if you played h.s. football you know the drills. At this level of play the guys are huge and fast and they all hit hard. The guys are going to get hurt just like in high school, although I don’t remember many major injuries. We had a guy break a bone in his neck and he blamed everyone else because they could have been in on the play and he could have been out. It sounds pitiful now and it was pitiful then. sprained ankles, sore shoulders are part of the game.
There is a nice article by dave kreiger today about floyd little and concussions in the Post. Now that is scary.
maybe I am getting old but its just part of the game. but there is a difference between playing hurt and being injured.

I agree Drew, that the season is too long and the players have a greater chance of getting hurt. I understand training camp is supposed to help them get ready for the games. The pre-season games are even getting bigger hype then they have when I was a kid watching football. I see on the NFL Network that they are advertising all the pre-season games as a big deal. This is all about the NFL trying to make more money. Even to go see pre-season games the tickets are as much as regular season.
This is the price of the NFL getting into a big business where it is a business not a sport.
