Sometimes it’s hard to know when “it’s time”. But Florida State head coach Bobby Bowden didn’t and apparently still doesn’t. And it made for an awkward exit from a program he helped build. It’s too bad, but coaches sometimes just become outdated. Every generation is different than the one before it. How Joe Paterno remains at Penn State is beyond me. But Joe really should go as well. It’s just part of the business. Kids become more difficult to relate to as time wears on.

I’ve got some fun illustrations to a must read column on Graduation Rates in college Athletics over on ESPN.com. Check it out here.

    Good Morning from Omaha,
If you watch Penn state games, Ol’ joe is giving his in put to his offensive coordinator but in general is more of figure head than a coach. It appears all of his coaches understand the arrangement- Joe recruits and gets kids to come to the school and his coaches do the rest. He is more of an CEO of Football Operations than the coach. When he had his bad knee last year he was up in the press box. the plays all seem to funnel through him. he will suggests a run or a pass and the coaches do the rest.
Bobby could have done the same thing, younger players relate to the younger coaches. Bobby could have done basically the same thing, and he probably was, as he rarely wore headsets at the game.
Its hard to know when to quit doing something that you love. I saw Bowden and Lou Holtz on espn yesterday slapping each other on the back and talking about loyalty. that is a word you don’t hear very often these days.
Strive for excellence, nothing but your best.

Today’s View From the Bull Pen

The World is in Chaos, The Economy is in the Dumpster...And Peyton Manning throws a Pass. Nice to know we have it all in perspective.

There isn't a way to leave comments in the Bull Pen (that I've found yet) so please feel free to leave your comments under the latest cartoon that I post.
