Dispatches From the Drawing Board:
- Nothing quite like signing a Hall of Fame quarterback to get the week started.
- Good stuff for a cartoonist.
- It should be great stuff for Broncos fans, but I get the feeling a lot of people don’t like adding Peyton Manning to the Broncos roster. Or more they don’t like the idea that Tim Tebow is about to be subtracted from it.
- The difference in the two quarterbacks is pretty complex. One can throw, read defenses and run a complex NFL offense from the line of scrimmage. The other one can’t.
- I like Tebow immensely. I like everything about him. But Peyton Manning he’s not.
- Manning gets you closer to the Lombardi trophy. Tebow gets you closer to the Heisman trophy. That’s the difference.
- I know I did a cartoon recently about Manning quitting while he’s still ahead. Here’s the link for it. That said, I’m not a doctor, so I kind of take it all back.
- Though I wouldn’t mind a doctors salary. Speaking of salaries, Peyton reportedly will sign for $95 million over 5 years. That isn’t too bad. Certainly not numbers cartoonists are used to seeing.
- Unless you were Charles Schulz, who made roughly $60 million a year in his prime.
- Yeah, you read that right.
- I can’t remember ever drawing three different cartoons on the same subject in the same day. Can I take the rest of the week off?
- Naw. THIS is too much fun.
- So what do ya do with Tebow? Trade him? To who, for what? Not a big market for running quarterbacks in the NFL.
- I wonder if Josh McDaniels wants him? I know. Bad joke.
- I say they give Tim his very own Tebow jersey concession kiosk in the South Stands. I mean someone needs to help subsidize Peyton’s $95 million contract.
- Got any better ideas. Well, let’s hear ‘em!
You know, I wonder what $60 million would be worth in 2012 dollars? maybe you’d be happy if you thought that way.
To be honest, I think this change will be good for Denver. I hate to say it, but while Tebow is a great player, he’s unfortunately a polarizing figure in Denver. If he’s out of the picture, Denver may be able to settle, and poke fun at Ubaldo Jimenez when we win the World Series.

I very much dislike the business-side of professional sports. I understand it, I get it, I simply do not like it.
How do you take someone who helped lead your team from the bottom of the sewer into the the playoffs, promise to work with him in the off-season to continue to develop his skills towards more NFL-like capabilities…and then use him for a doormat??? And for what….an aging quarterback with a HUGE target on his neck.
I know that the goal of any sports team is to win the huge trophy at the end of the season. I’ve been a Bronco fan all of my life, and will remain one. However, I feel like Elway, Xanders, & Fox totally dissed Tebow by not being honest with him, as to the possiblity he would not be the QB in Denver. If the Broncos can’t trade Tebow, then they have to pay him the remainder of his contract; which, I think, is like $12-13 million. If a team does pick him up, it is at clearance sale prices.
I like Manning; don’t get me wrong. I’m just having a hard time wrapping my head around the idea of him in Bronco orange and blue. Drew, out of the three cartoons you have drawn today, this one sums up what I have been feeling all day long. I will follow Tebow no matter who he plays for, as I like him for the person that he is and how he carries his life off the field. (Which is more than I can say about how I feel towards “Elway – the Suit” at the moment.)
WOW! This cartoon is straight up disrespectful to Tebow! I don’t know who is worse at disrespecting a really nice guy you or Drew Soicher! Way to go on being a jerk

My feelings on the subject is torn. However unlike a lot of others I have no great love, though I do have heavy thanks for what Tim Tebow did last season.
However every time Peyton Manning takes a sack for the next two seasons I’ll be waiting with held breath to see if he gets up.
I’ve heard some of the teams who might want Tebow. For the record I hope they want too little for him. My mind just can see him under what I call “Manning’s learning tree.” and absorb so much wisdom that he could utilize after #18 is retired. I would not mind seeing Tebow as the “Kubiak” to Manning’s “Elway”

Only time will tell. tebow has learned that loyalty does not exist in the NFL.
the bronco;s have fallen off the evolutionary bandwagon and made an expensive and safe choice. With all the running and throwing qb’s coming out of college the league is going to have to change. Its that simple.
with all the stout defenses out there built to stop either the pass and then the run or the run and then the pass things have to change offensively. The dual threat qb like cam newton is the way things are going to go.
IF manning can play, great. If he gets hurt then what. The bronco’s are all in on Peyton- so its to early to be Heyton on Peyton, but if he gets hurt the change back to Tebow would be too severe, but who is going to have Peytons back.
Basically Elway made the safe but expensive choice. When faced with two ledges he jumped off the 100 foot one with peyton, bad neck and all, instead of leaping into the dark hole of tebow mania. He made his choice. give it a chance to see how it turns out.
Put tebow at TE. He can play the game and his athletic ability needs to be on the field somewhere. THe bronco’s can still use him but not at qb.

How is this disrespectful? It’s a metaphor for how some folks feel Tebow could be feeling. Since when is it disrespectful to acknowledge someone’s feelings?
Personally, I laughed my ass off when I saw this on 9News. I hope I wasn’t being disrespectful.
Good one Drew, is that Elway holding the door? I am always amazed at how you get the essence of people, ie the in and out boxes in the middle cartoon! I love the fact that I get Bronco news in Portland. This move gives us all something to talk about,to look forward to seeing how it plays out. Tebow will land on his feet, whatever happens, he will work hard, and continue to generate good feelings where ever he goes. I think he understands the nature of the game, and the fact that this “regime” did not pick him. We must assume that there is a plan for the future, Peyton will not be around for too many years, John has to know that.

I don’t think Cori here got the cartoon. Drew isn’t expressing feelings here he is making an observation. Turn on ESPN for 5 minutes and you will see how the Broncos orginization has slapped Tim Tebow in the face “Oh hey thanks for taking our 1-4 joke of a team to it’s first division title in years, pulling off a stunning upset in the playoffs, and then taking time from your time off to continue to work on your skills… were going to get rid of you for this crippled old man. Thanks again.”
Tim Tebow doesn’t deserve what he is getting here, and I recenly read that they want to bring in Ryan Mallet from New England to “Groom” him. If they can take that risk on him why not on Tebow?
Elway couldn’t drive Tebow to the airport and on a flight to NY fast enough after getting Manning signed.
It is so sad to see the Broncos turn their backs on Tebow. The guy was a real competitor, positive influence, and a game changer. Sure, Manning is an upgrade if he stays healthy, but what happens in a year or two? Who is the next Denver QB for the future?
Heck, who is the next QB if Manning has to come out for a single play?
Getting Manning and trading Tebow means the Broncos just mortgaged their future seasons on the hope 2012 will be a winner. While I’d love to see another SB win, spending another 10 years in QB wasteland is not how I’d like to see the Broncos franchise.
