Thanks for the support here on the blog. I’m gearing up for the start of the football season with some fun things right around the corner. It’s been a busy few weeks with trips to ESPN and to NYC. I’m not used to        that much travel and it’s an adjustment returning to the drawing board.

I’m trying to find room in my schedule as well for more Broncos cartoons, which I love to draw. The problem is, other than the ones I do for 9News, I don’t get paid to do them anymore. My current schedule is  full of projects (crazy full at times) that pay the bills. Trying to find the time and creative energy to continue to draw more Broncos cartoons is a dilemma I’ve been wrestling with for some time. I’m doing the best I can in this new life after the Rocky Mountain News. I know how some of you are disappointed and frustrated there aren’t more local Colorado cartoons here. I’m with you on that. I’d love to draw all Denver cartoons every day of the week. But I have to make a living too. I’ve toyed with some kind of pay plan for awhile. 1000 people giving anywhere from $10.00 to 25.00 a year could add up quickly. But that just doesn’t seem right to ask you all for money, especially given these tough times. So please be patient with me. I’ll find a solution somehow. But please know your readership means the world to me.

I’ll continue to do all that I can to earn it each and every day.

  1. good morning from Omaha,

drew, you have to do what you have to do to pay the bills. you must have a backlog of cartoons that you ran like the animation you did of Uncle “AL” in the wheelchair.

the old line is “if it doesn’t make dollars, it doesn’t make sense”

we are all benefitting from this downturn, you growing your business, me getting another education in a field that I have always enjoyed. Carly simon used to sing about “the good old days”. maybe not for us, but our kids will look back and even with all the troubles , call these THEIR good old days!!!

strive for excellence, nothing but your best!

  2. Love the site and have always enjoyed your cartoons Drew! If you ever get a chance, I’d love to see what you could do for a CarGo aka Lil’ Pony, toon. He’s got that great faux-hawk I’m sure you could work well with. Anyway, thanks for the entertaining site!

  3. When the Rocky folded I thought: I hope that isn’t the last of Drew Litton. *YOU* were the only reason I bothered to open the Rocky at all. I’m glad you are paying the bills anyway you can. It doesn’t bother me at all if you are not cartooning about Denver teams much. I want to read Drew Litton cartoons, whatever they are about, paid for by whoever can afford them.

  4. Dear Mr. Litton,

I have an idea, it might be a little crazy (or it could be a A LOT crazy) to help you supplement your income. You may even be doing this now and if so forgive me.

Have you ever given thought to perhaps being commissioned to do a cartoon piece for a paying individual, with the agreement that if it came out really well you’d be allowed to share it with everybody via your blog. This way you can make money, and continue to show what is on the average persons mind.

Of course the first thing a person doing the commisioning would need to know is #1 how much would it cost and #2 how long (about) would it take to do? It may also be impractical since it would cut into your valuable time. Still I thought I’d throw out the suggestion for you to mull over.

Still a fan. Now and always,

    All the best,

    Louis

  5. Drew,

You do what you have to do to put a roof over your family’s head and food on the table.

The ‘toons you provide on this site are wonderful and they keep me coming back everyday to see if you put another up for us. Honestly, I don’t know how you keep the drawing schedule up placing free ‘toons for our consumption every day.

I’m not sure putting the ‘toons behind a pay wall will work too well. The internet is kind of like a newspaper at a coffee joint. There is always a daily paper someone left behind on a table. You come to the coffee joint, buy a cuppa, and see the newspaper on an empty table. You grab the paper, read the bits you like, finish your coffee, and leave the paper for the next person. No one except for the first guy paid for the paper, but everyone else sure enjoyed it.

My initial thought is you need to focus more on paying work, or just working less hours on the free stuff. Whether you post a daily free ‘toon or a weekly free ‘toon, your free-loading readership will survive.

After reading Louis’ suggestion, I think he is on to something far better with people commissioning a ‘toon with you reserving the right to publish the work on your blog. This is a win-win for everyone.

My $.005… the other $.015 is attributed to Louis for a great idea.

    Mike
