Distant Replay: Special Request.

Uncategorized

By special request, here is the followup cartoon to the Elway-Sakic one.

Thanks to, Larry Strutton, former publisher of the Rocky Mountain News who wandered down to my drawing board in the newsroom the Tuesday after I returned from the Broncos victory in Super Bowl XXXII and suggested Elway-Sakic need a reprise. Larry never made suggestions for cartoons. It’s always best to just let the cartoonist be the cartoonist and he understood that. But he had a good point on this one. So I did it. So, Larry, if you’re out there, this one’s for you. Those were the days, weren’t they.

  1. absolutely great.. I remember when this came out, and it could have been more on point. Thanks for the memories.

  2. Thanks for reprinting the cartoon. I thought I remembered this cartoon correctly in a previous post but obviously I was wrong. Still this was a hall-of-fame cartoon to me.

  3. I remember after Larry Strutton came by and said I needed to update the Elway-Sakic cartoon now that Elway had won the Super Bowl, I was a bit panic stricken. It’s hard enough coming up with concepts, but when the Publisher asks me to do it, well, you can imagine the pressure. So I sweated bullets for a few hours. What am I going to do? How can I reprise it? Finally, after the stress of it all had taken a few years off of my life, this image popped into mind. The ultimate torment of all would be Dan Reeves having to endure Elway gloating. Whew. I knew instantly that was the image. It made Mr. Strutton happy, and apparently a lot of Rocky readers. Me, I was just relieved I hadn’t choked when The Big Guy was counting on me.

The following year I spent the two weeks before Super Bowl XXXIII totally petrified. It was Elway vs. Reeves and I really didn’t want to have to do a third version if the Falcons had won.

  4. Here’s another one I remember from the Nuggets years.

It was during the Dallas vs Denver playoffs many many years ago – think it was still English playing, and you had drawn a competing cartoon against this Dallas cartoonist.

I can’t for the life of me remember what it is, but the Dallas cartoonist had the old Nuggets logo with the pickaxe.

  5. Thanks Drew for the great capture of those two great seasons. You could of easily had poor Marty in that same situation and it would of been just as great. Hard to say its been over a decade that the our broncos are not on top of the world anymore. Keep hoping Josh McDaniels can bring this team back.as always GO BRONCOS!!!
