The odds aren’t good. Simply put waiting for an NBA player to make a free throw is a bit like waiting for the Cubs to win the World Series. It just ain’t gonna happen. At least in our lifetimes. It reminds me of one of my favorite stories. Legendary basketball coach Don Haskins, all 250 plus pounds of him, had a player who apparently thought a bit highly of himself and didn’t find his deficiency at the free throw line to be that big of a deal. Haskins challenged him to a free throw contest and let the kid go first. The kid hit a couple out of 10 or so and proudly handed old man Haskins the ball. After the coach hit his 100th in a row without a miss the kid learned his lesson. Don’t argue with the Bear. And learn to shoot free throws.

Big Hits=Big Money. It’s a formula the NFL has perfected throughout the years, encouraging players to hit and hit hard, showing “highlights” of those very hits all the while claiming that they are doing all they can to “clean” up the game. So they fine a few guys (totally up to the leagues discretion) now and again. But they do little to compensate or attempt to help those players of yesteryear who are now aging with severe disabilities related to their years in the NFL. I know. Those players knew the risks. But perhaps those risks have become much larger than we originally knew about. With players becoming bigger and faster and playing at lightening speeds on the field are the risks greater than ever before? We won’t know the results of Junior Seau’s death for some time. But maybe, just maybe, it will force the NFL to address a very clear and present danger.

I always love big breaking news stories. Especially when a city is all abuzz about it. That’s what happened last night here in Dallas where I’ve been spending some time lately. The TV’s were on in the pub I was in (A Place Called the Holy Grail, how cool is that name) and people were talking Hamilton Homers all evening. Josh Hamilton had 4 of them in a historical night at Camden Fields in Baltimore, something not even Babe Ruth or Mickey Mantle accomplished. And it was so cool to be a part of it in a place that is becoming as Rabid for the Rangers as they have been for The Cowboys.
