I’ll Have Another: Quest for the Crown

Uncategorized

So we find ourselves on the verge of history. I’ll Have Another is on the precipice of greatness. But it’s not that easy to win the Triple Crown. Just ask the scores of jockies and trainers who have fallen short of the prize. I haven’t seen the movie Secretariat (have you?) but it might be a good time to check it out. I’ve never been a huge race horsing guy. In fact I once tried to sneak in a cartoon at the Rocky Mountain News about what I consider the animal cruelty aspect of the sport. My editor at the time, a great guy from Paducah, Kentucky, would have no part of it. So it ended up on the cutting room floor. I’m not even sure if I even did any roughs, the discussion didn’t get very far. I seem to remember him uttering the words “Ain’t No Way” ! The closest I ever got the the sport of Horse Racing was going to high school with some jockey…What was his name? Oh, yeah. Some guy named Jerry Bailey.

And that’s my name drop of the day. (Never even met him).

  1. Going to be tough to get that Triple Crown, I’ll Have Another drew the outside position. Think there might be a conspiracy?

  2. Horse Racing: Another instance of how much times have changed in the sports world. If you go back in time 60 years, you could have listed it as one of the Big Three sports in the US, along with Boxing and Baseball.

Now, Baseball is fighting to hold onto its spot in the Big Three, passed up by Football and fighting with Basketball for the No. 2 slot. In the meantime, Boxing and Horse Racing have both been passed and lapped by Hockey, Nascar, Golf, MMA, Soccer, Tennis, and College Sports.

That said: I’m a sucker for a good story, and I’ll Have Another put on a great finish at Pimlico. A longer race suits him. I hope he does it, because I was only 4 when Seattle Slew did it last.

  3. And, suggestions for this weekend: Thunder make the Finals, Kings will (probably) wrap up the Stanley Cup without resorting to thuggery, and Euro 2012 starts tomorrow!

  4. Dear Drew,

I’ll be pulling for I’ll Have Another this weekend. If I feel up to it I might even go down to Red & Jerry’s where they have off track betting and bet on the race (among others). I like the horses chances. His style is perfect for the mile and a half. Of course two of the top horses from the derby rested annd didn’t run in the Preakness so they’ll be a threat.

For the record I have seen Secretariat the movie several times. A good watch and even though I know the result I still get the same emotions and thrills watching his domination at the Belmont Stakes. The closest human equivilant to what he did was Bob Beamon at the Mexico Olympic’s when he destroyed the long jump record.

This weekend I’ll be most interested in seeing the Kings a #8 seed winning the cup.

    All the best

    Louis

  5. Good morning from Omaha,

It’ll be fun to see if I’ll have another will be able to complete the triple crown. I don;t think there will ever be another “super” horse like secretariat. The trainers and owners have tried to replicate the genetics of those horses of the past and have basically failed.

I hope I’ll have another takes it but the race is one and half mile long and for a horse thats is a long way to run.Heck most people can’t run that far at full speed.

for the first time in over 30 years it would be fun to see a triple crown winner so we will see. the last time this was accomplished was in ’78. that was the year I married the lovely wife.I guess I won the triple crown that year, when I married her, she has been one of the best things ever to happen to me.

Strive for excellence, nothing but your best.

  6. Well the triple crown dream has officially died. I’ll Have Another has been withdrawn from the Belmont for an injury

  7. Gene,

I love your comment “in ’78. that was the year I married the lovely wife.I guess I won the triple crown that year, when I married her, she has been one of the best things ever to happen to me.” You are one very lucky and blessed guy!!!

  8. i am heartbroken. 1) because I’ll Have Another is out and 2) (selfishly) such sweet words will not be said of me. You are a lucky man, Gene. Have not seen what the injury is, hopefully I’ll Have Another will recover and live a long and happy life. That goes for Gene, as well. OK, the rest of you, too.

  9. GMFO-

what a let down… but you have to protect the animal. there will always be next year. In the meantime there are a lot of options for “i’ll have another”.He will probably start dating other horses for pay, like a giggalo on four legs. clean barn, good food and ladies- what a deal!

Heard this morning on the today show that the name comes from the owners tendency to ask for another cookie and has nothing to do with alcohol.

kind of a funny but true story.

Strive for excellence, nothing but your best.

  10. I often wonder how they come up with some of these names they give racing horses, you never see a “George” running in the Races.

I think we all need to come up with a name and let Drew do his magic on it. LOL

  11. Gene–

You are right about I’ll Have Another’s owners wanting to protect the animal. Unfortunately, the latest news I heard was that the horse’s injury was career-ending. What a pity.
