Let’s Cut Right to the Chase…

The Chase Utley-Ruben Tejada collision at second base has ignited a firestorm of controversy in this years MLB playoffs. The question is whether to suspend Utley for his slide into second over the weekend which resulted in Tejada breaking his right fibula. Personally, I think Utley should be suspended for a lot longer than a few games. But I’m also all for taking the approach featured in this cartoon to even the score. The series between these two teams could get ugly.

  1. Agree with the analysis, Drew. Much of the blame is with MLB umpires for the inconsistencies and how they now wait for Replay to make final calls. They used to not fear making calls as “part of the game” and using judgement, whether it was blocking the plate, or interference. I thought the reason they instituted the IR was to “get the call right”, but it appears that if it might incite the home crowd fans to do so, they back off the correct calls. At the very minimum, Utley should have been ruled out for straying from the basepath to intentionally break up the DP. He deserves at least a two game ban, and I think he should pick up the medical bills as well. Thanks.

  2. I disagree. Utley was doing what many baseball players have done in the past. This is a post season game, with a lot on the line. He was trying to help his team by breaking up a double play. That’s it. One of the Met’s did a similar slicde into Dodger Jimmy Roillins at 2nd base in a game last July. Jimmy was not injured, but he took quite a hit and if you look at the play, the runner was quite a bit further away from the base then Utley was. Utley should not be the lone scapegoat for this type of move when it’s been done many many times before. Also, Tejada should not have been doing a showboating 360 turn with a runner running at top speed right in his direction. Utley’s suspension should be overturned and the rules should be looked at in the off season. Even Cal Ripkin Jr. agrees!

  3. I agree with Julie, Tejada brought this upon himself. And apparently Julie knows a hell a lot more then you do Dusty.

  4. Illegal, inexcusable, immoral, unethical, unprofessional, unsportsmanlike, un-American, and unacceptable.

  5. Too many players are getting hurt on these breaking up the double play slides. They need to ban it like they did with catchers blocking home plate and runners plowing into them. Any player sliding into another teams’ player intentionally should be automatically thrown out of the game and suspended.

Utley clearly slide, late, into Tejada; Utley has done it before trying to break up a double play. He has now become baseball’s version of a hockey goon.

  6. I thought Utley’s slide, albeit a bit late, was well within the constraints imposed by the “McRae Rule”. He made contact with the bag with his hand. It wasn’t nearly as egregious as the slides Hal McRae used to make that the rule was intended to disallow. If Tejada had not been injured and the whole scenario thrown into replay we wouldn’t even be talking about it. It was an aggressive baseball play.

  7. @Julie Everyone is entitled to their opinion here, but I think its a little callous to call it showboating by Tejada. It was a tough play up the middle, Murphys throw made him reach and the only way he could have made the play was to try and spin around that way. He was moving away from the bag to avoid Utley, which is why Utley had to slide wide AND late in order to get to him. and also @Dusty, stfu, girls can know baseball too.

  8. 2nd base was in the area, but obviously wasn’t the target. Utley slid into Tejada first. 2nd base was an afterthought.
