May the Farce be with you: College Football Playoff

It’s a farce, really. The event most of us have waited the better part of a lifetime to see, the first ever real college Football Playoff and it turns into a farce. We should have seen it coming. The massive egos, the greed that has made the college game nothing more than the minor leagues of the NFL. Still, I personally held out hope that it might not be merely a representation of the reprehensible, that it might not be yet another event that ESPN not only covers but plays a roll in shaping. Someday, maybe we will get a field of 16 teams that might, just maybe, include a real underdog that can upset one of the elites, one of the megacorporate football programs of the NCAA. A school that might actually care about the kids who play there. But what we are left with this year is all of the ugliness of what college football has become. For me I’m left with a feeling of emptiness. Like asking for an awesome Lionel Santa Fe Chief Train Set for Christmas only to find the box empty when you get it opened. Yeah. this playoff stinks. So it’s off to Amazon for me to order some decent movies to watch in place of this wretched excuse for a “real playoff”. Forgive me if I just don’t have the stomach for it.

  1. Loved the above ‘toon…. So very right and topical. And yeah, a 16-team playoff would be very cool.

In the lower divisions we already have playoffs… In Division 2 the CSU-Pueblo ThunderWolves have reached the Division 2 semifinals and will host their game this weekend. It would be very cool to see a ‘toon featuring them, with the

    unique Drew touch!

Both CSU-Pueblo and the Colorado School of Mines play in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, and both were

nationally ranked (in Division 2) for much of the season. So we have some good small-college football here. And it is education FIRST and athletics second, the way it should be… Very few of the players at a Division 2 school will ever play professionally …

These small schools are NOT the NFL’s “minor league” referred to above!

I’ve been a fan since Drew started at the Rocky Mountain News, even before the famous Killer Uprights cartoon…

    Keep On Keepin’ On!

    Best — John.

  2. To dream … the impossible dream …

To fight … the unbeatable foe …

To bear … with unbearable sorrow …

To run … where the brave dare not go …

    and so the Dream continues…..

  3. 8 team playoff:

    >5 “Power Conference” Champions (SEC, Big 10, Pac 12, ACC… and hold a gun to the Big 12’s head and MAKE them set up a tiebreaker for conf. championship) automatic bids

    >1 Conference Champ from the “Group of Five” (Mountain West, MAC, American, C-USA, Sun Belt) – let the committee pick that one.

    >2 At-Large bids – let the committee pick again

    >Committee seeds Conference Champs 1-6, At Large teams seeded 7 and 8, avoiding a conference rematch.

    >Quarterfinals on Christmas Eve

    >Semis on New Year’s

    >Final 8-10 Days later

This way, you have all of it done over the holidays, you assure the minor conferences of a presence every season, and give a couple of conference runners-up another shot at glory, albeit the hard way.
