  1. Good Morning from Omaha,

I have often wondered how many student/athletes actually graduate from the big football factory schools. They will honor their academic all americans but sometimes during a game the television people will put up some of the players stats.

Things like height, weight, hometown and even there academic major. I remember one player having a major of playground. I saw that about three times and then after that they never showed it again. I tried to point it out to my wife but they never showed it again.

In the spring, around graduation time the Omaha paper puts out a whole section if the sunday paper devoted to students who achieve academic excellence. You’ll see page after page of students from around not only Omaha but from Southwest Iowa who are the best of their classes and yes they even list the school of choice for each student. It shines that spotlight on those students who sparkle both on and off the field.

I guess if more attention was paid to the academic side of student life there would be no more “basket weaving” majors in college sports. In reality people don’t fill 100K seat stadiums to watch someone study for an organic chemistry exam.

and as walter cronkite used to say “and thats the way it is”.

Strive for excellence, nothing but your best.

    Gene

  2. We have the same thing at the school where I teach! The top 10% of students are on the auditorium stage and all announce in turn where they’re attending, sometimes with the college caps or t-shirts as props. This should catch on!
