Today’s View From the Bull Pen
St Patty's Day
To celebrate the return of Patrick Roy, I thought I'd post my three favorite and most requested Roy cartoons from my days at the Rocky Mountain News. I'm excited he's back and I know you guys are too. So here's to St Patty. I'll raise a pint o' Guinness to that!
Have a great a safe memorial day weekend! As always, your readership and your comments help to make the world go round, so please continue to add them. I will try to do a better job of responding.
There isn't a way to leave comments in the Bull Pen so please feel free to leave your comments under the latest cartoon that I post.

A-Rod: Yankee Stankee

Just a Note
The greatest web guy on the planet, Steve Foster, will be doing some fine-tooning of the website in the next few days. If you experience any oddities for the next few days please bear with us. We’re trying to take this site from what was originally intended to be a portfolio site and transforming it into a real live website, with a little more ability to grow it in the days and months ahead. Thanks for being a part of it all.

Chauncey’s Cookin’ Now

Nuggets are on a Roll
And so it goes, on and on and on. The Mavericks looked positively baffled at the end of the game, and the Nuggets looking more like the cat who just wolfed the canary. It was a full day at the drawing board, working on tweaks to the website, a new cartoon for 9News, a Nuggets cartoon for drewlitton.com and a syndicated one for United Features as well. I absolutely dispel any myths about cartoonists who spend the day on the golf course. I hope you enjoy the changes we are making to make things a little more fun here on the blog. It will probably be Wednesday before you notice any changes. -
The offiicial Bird Watchers Cartoon Caption Contest

TGIF: Bird Watchers Cartoon Caption Contest
The Nuggets are hot and so are all you caption writers. Last weeks contest was our best ever. Let’s make this one as good as that 58 point Nuggets crushing of the Hornets in game 4. Here’s our rules: Keep the caption clean and keep them original. We’ll give out the prizes like last week. The Winner gets the original cartoon with their caption, a t-shirt and a Birdzilla sketch ( or an Elway if you prefer). Two runner-ups get free t-shirt and a Birdzilla or Elway sketch.A Few Tweaks coming your way.
I’ll be working with my webmaster extraordinaire, Steve Foster, this weekend to add a few bells and whistles to the site. Hopefully you’ll like the extra features even though they are nothing major. And be sure to be parked in front of your sets on Sunday afternoon as the Nuggets take on Dallas. I’ll have a cartoon up late Sunday night in time for your cup of coffee and a sports cartoon on Monday morning. It’s almost as good as sleeping in. -
Mike Kaplan Wins Contest: Film at 11

Holy Mackerel Mike! Great Caption!
Mike Kaplan is this weeks winner of our Cartoon Caption Contest. Way to go, Mike. We were inundated with caption entries. You guys set a new record here on the site for most entries ever at 140. THAT is way cool. Clearly many of you were disturbed by last weeks Broncos draft so hopefully this gave you the proper place to vent. There were so many good captions it was really hard to judge. I could have had a ton of runner-ups. But, since we set the ground rules last week, I’ll pick two:
Annje with “Great! Another season wandering in the desert”.
Trevor with “OK. This is out of hand. Now he thinks he IS Belichick.”Mike, Trevor and Annje, please send me your contact information at sportoonz@gmail.com. I want to get your t-shirts, cartoons and sketches in the mail asap.

Nuggets : Doin’ the Round Two Step

Amazing what a difference a year can make
Gone are the sullen days of Allen Iverson. Behind Chauncey Billups and Carmelo Anthony, with contributions from Birdzilla and J.R. Smith the Nuggets disposed of the Hornets and cruised into round Two of the NBA playoffs. Finally, the long drought for the Nuggets is over. The Hanzlik, and Issel eras are only vanishing visions in the rear view mirror. And, more importantly, Melo has learned how to win. I’ve been pretty rough on Melo through the years. But I’m glad to see him take this team into the second round. The Nuggets are the team nobody wants to play. Hang on. It might be a nice long fun ride.Caption Contest winding down
This week’s caption contest is coming to a close. We’ll take entries until 6 p.m. tonight. So run, hurry, and write lots of captions. The more you enter the better your chances. -
Yankee Stadium: The True Story

The House that Bozo Built
Maybe it’s the Red Sox stuff still secretly buried beneath home plate. Maybe its a different kind of curse of the Bambino. Regardless, Yankees Stadium has now replaced Coors Field as the the Home Run capital of Baseball. Can some some body say “humidor”.Caption Contest Going Strong
Thanks to everyone for the great response to this weeks caption contest. So awesome to see the participation growing. Keep those concepts coming and be sure to invite the person in the next cubicle to see if you can beat them at it. Nothing like a little inner-office rivalry. I think that’s the way the Yankees vs Red Sox war got started. -
A bit of Perspective

Time Out for this Public Service Announcement
This was one of those cartoons that I just needed to get out of my system. Perhaps because I find myself in the same predicament as the guy in the third panel, perhaps because I find it so outrageous that someone is getting $42 Million just to sign a contract. The money is guaranteed. We have lost so much perspective in this modern era of sports. Players are coddled early, never told no, and pretty much spend their lives oblivious to the outside world. So this cartoon is for all of you out there who sometimes feel like we have it all backwards. That teachers and firemen and people who help people are the ones who should be given the huge salaries. This one is for those of you who feel perhaps that life isn’t fair (it isn’t) and just want to scream at the injustice of it all. Yeah, this one’s for you.
