Realignment: Which Way Do We Go?

Uncategorized

I don’t know about you, but all of these conference realignment changes has me completely and hopelessly lost. And you know how hard it is for guys to ask for directions. With the big story of the day being Notre Dame’s move to the ACC it got me to thinking about how confusing this has all become. Who is where and when and what conference are they in again? And then there are the long time rivalries getting tossed in the trash along the way. For me, it’s just one more reminder that no one seems to care much about how the fans feel about these moves. It’s all about the money. Isn’t it always.

That said I love this drawing and mixing in one of the classic quotes of all-time from the great Yogi Berra. No one says it quite like Yogi. So while I’m aware that you all love my Broncos cartoons, it’s images like this that make me feel like maybe I chose the right profession after all. Have a great day.

  1. Good Morning from Omaha,

lets see IF I have this correct- the big 10 has 12 teams, the big 12 has 10 teams and the PAC is aiming from 16 but only has 12. Must be college level math. the rest of the conferences don’t use numbers in their name- ACC, Big east, Conference USA Mountain West.

The realignment has revealed the pretenders. Teams like NE, CO and to some extent MO have found that the grass is not really all that green on the other side of the conference fence. Some thought NE would roll through the big 10 like grant through richmond. Wrong again.

The SEC dreams of MO could turn into a nightmare once they hit the stronger teams in the conference.

This alignment of teams has allowed the fans to be exposed to different styles of the game. The speed of SEC is scary. UCLA in the pac 12 is undergoing a transformation that will startle anyone who even casually watches the game, or maybe has reverted back to being a plow horse team like it was in the early 90’s.

What I am trying to say, and not succeeding, is I like watching something besides Big 12 football which was all we had here on the prairie. Maybe its that I like watching more then NE football and all of a sudden they are broadcasting over 20 games on a saturday. Maybe I just like to watch football. Nah it couldn’t be that simple.

Strive for excellence, nothing but your best.

  2. Gene,

I love the things you say and the way that you say them. The “roll through the Big 10 like Grant through Richmond” is as good a line as any sports columnist I have ever read. Just classic. I look forward to every comment you share here. Thanks so very much!

Wow, I didn’t know that Notre Dame gave up being an independent school. I’m not quite sure how to process that information.

Totally agree with your comments about old rivalries getting thrown in the trash. It’s a shame, really. A good football rivalry brings an intangible into the event… games that should have been walkovers aren’t sometimes.

    Gene–

Great comments on the sudden explosion of college games on Saturdays!
