TCU: Out in the Cold

Thoughts and musings for a Thursday:

* I feel sorry for TCU and for Horned Frogs fans everywhere. The system robbed them of a chance to win it all on a National stage.

* I’m pulling for John Fox to get the Broncos job. He has great credentials as a defensive coach and a leader who had the Panthers close to winning a Super Bowl. Yeah, I know, he just got fired for going 2-14. But this fact from this recent story in the New York Times explains the reason Fox is available and that the 2-14 record isn’t really all his fault:

A rift developed between Richardson (Carolina’s owner) and Fox after Carolina’s 33-13 loss to Arizona in the team’s last playoff game in January 2009. Fox was more vocal this season in showing displeasure with several personnel moves that left the Panthers short on experience and talent.

* Trade Melo or don’t trade Melo, but, please, for the love of God just decide already.

* I remember, when I was a kid, my cousin, David, bringing me a Horned Frog in a shoe box from Brownwood, Texas,. I grew up in El Paso, which is some 400 miles west of Brownwood. We had lizards, but not Horned Frogs. Horned Frogs don’t do well in a dry climate. In fact they eventually croak in a dry climate. And by croak I don’t mean they make a noise, I mean they actually kick the bucket. Buy the farm. It wasn’t pretty.

* I learned early in life, never let the Horned Frog out of the shoe box he came in.

* I also learned early in life, Mother’s who are freaked out by Horned Frogs who are let out of the shoe box SCREAM really loud.

* And maybe even faint a little.

  1. Drew,

We have a good friend who went to TCU. She could not be prouder of TCU’s success. Was wearing a TCU pin, had a banner flying in her restaurant, etc.

I asked her how she felt about the BCS (IDW) rankings and she simply told me her team won its first bowl game. Perspective is a wonderful thing!

  2. I totally disagree w/ you on this one. Play somebody like Alabama(roll tide), LSU, Cal, USC, Oregon etc, etc. Tcu cannot match up with the power houses. Pure pretenders that’s tcu. They sould have been ranked 3 or 4. But if it was a plus one I go huge give the points and make easy money and make fools of themselfs while I make money on a lock of the year. Case proven in point. Sugar Bowl a few years ago when Georgia played Hawaii what easy money that was. What a laugher all the way to the bank. Literally. So in a way I do want a plus one. TCU beats the bowl games whipping boy the big 10, while the SEC wins their fifth championship against a real team Oregon. Just sayin…..my personal opinion the BCS got it right this year.

  3. Dear Drew,

I’ve already spouted off heavily on my opinion about TCU not having a chance to play for the national Title so the less I spout off now the better.

Yes, Fox could be a good fit for the Bronco’s. For me however I’m pulling for Dennison. To me it would be the equivilant of the local boy making good. I say local boy only because he’s been with the orginazation for so long as a player and then as an assistant coach.

I look at the Melo trade/no trade as a modern day version of the hokey pokey (feel free to sing with me here). You put the Melo in, you put the Melo out, you put the Melo in and you shake it all about. You do the Melo pokey till you head will spin around. That’s what its all about. (stopping the song before my voice makes people’s ears bleed. As my best friend likes to say I have the perfect voice for lip-sync.)

You might find this funny. When I first heard of a horned frog I was a young teen and thought it was some form of sex.

    In other thoughts

I’m now pulling for Seattle in the playoffs. I want to see how far they can continue to irritate the big guns of the NFL. They are the professional eqivilant of the non-automatic qualifiers of the NCAA.

I need to get back to sleep soon but not tired. Too bad I don’t have any of the Bronco games from this season to put me to sleep.

In just 3 years 6 months and 12 day’s I can retire from my job and then head down to Arizona to watch the Rockies in Spring Training.

Speaking of the Rockies I’m thrilled of the financial and time commitments to their young stars like Tulo, Cargo, and the Big U (can’t spell our star pitchers first name).

Finally congrats to our NHL all star players from Colorado.

Well I think I’ve spoken long enough.

    All the best

  4. Good Morning from Omaha,

TCU has been a threat to the BCS for many years. I saw them play the Rams up at the Fort and was astonished at the overall team speed. Now maybe the Rams helped by being slow but I was really impressed by TCU over the last several years.

They have beaten everyone they have played again this season and to not even be offered a shot at the crown is a disgrace to college football fans everywhere. For every alabama v. Hawaii there is a Boise St v. Oklahoma.

Yes it will be a little more difficult for TCU when they start to play in the big east they will learn to play at that higher level of competition every week and become that national power that horned frog fans know and love.

Strive for excellence, nothing but your best.

    Gene

  5. Matty, TCU beat Wisconsin who was rolling the “murderer’s row” by 50 points practically every game; so don’t give me this little sisters of the poor b.s. If not for a fluke loss to Michigan St., Wisconsin beats out Oregon to be the sacrificial lamb for Auburn. TCU is doing everything it can to play tougher competition, hence the move to the Big East(I think they should’ve went to the Big XII).

  6. Shouldn’t that be Gordon Gee inside the BCS house instead of Auburn?

Plus, if TCU wants to be taken seriously, why are going to the Big East instead of the Big 12, where they actually belong. Is TCU that afraid of losing to Texas and Oklahoma by four touchdowns – or just beating them by just two or three points?

  7. Mike,

I love it when fans are just happy with what they get. Even if it is the short end of the stick they prefer to look at it as the glass half full. gotta love that!

  8. MattyG,

Great Comment bud. My head tells me you’re right, my heart shouts for “PLAYOFFS”!

  9. Louis,

Phenomenal comments today. You covered everything in a nutshell. 3 years to retirement! Congrats. Arizona is so awesome. I will miss the Rox training in Tucson, it’s a different pace there than in Phoenix, but I do think the move will help the team in the long run.

  10. Gene,

Are you coming to Denver or did that get postponed? TCU has been a factor since the days of LaDanian Tomlinson. I remember him running for 400 yards against UTEP. If you notice a common theme in my college football cartoons, it’s always about “Playoffs”. I’m glad you agree. Have a great day man!

  11. Derrick, I agree. I always think of competition in college football as a pretty fleeting thing. Sure the SEC rules these days, but every big school has a whole bunch of “lesser” schools they play. Nebraska has always managed to schedule some light opponents, especially early, and often at home. It’s part of the deal.

  12. Good Ol’ George,

I remember the days when the Big 12 WAS the place to be. Now they’ve become the Border Valley conference. or some such mundane long lost football conference of old. I don’t really get the whole conference shuffle that we’ve gone through in the last two years, except this: it’s all about the money.

  13. Good evening from Austria.

Great News for the Broncos as Elway announced the hiring of Fox as next Head Coach!

  14. Looks like you got one of your wishes, Drew. Maybe Dennison will come back as defensive coordinator? I am not sure what to make of Fox, but suspected personnel might be the problem in Carolina. Hope he gets a good offensive coordinator. Does anyone know what Studesville will be doing? Love the memories, Drew, pretty sure I would scream upon seeing a horned frog, especially if it had croaked.

  15. Thank you for the imput, the ol’ sayin goes like this, I follow my head and not my heart especially when I bet against the Broncos this season. It broke my heart but filled my pocket book.

  16. The Results from the Badger Invitational Tournament (Presented by XBox and EA Sports):

    Auburn 29, Oklahoma 20

Texas Christian 30, Wisconsin 24 (a little different in the virtual world)

    Championship

But at least we’d know for sure…
