What a Pain

It was bad enough to have the whole Broncos bandwagon swerving back and forth in traffic, but it’s an entirely different matter to have the sucker drive completely right off the road. But that’s exactly what has happened in this whole Cutler vs. McDaniels war. The sad part is nobody wins. Not the Broncos, not Cutler and, mostly, not the Broncos fans, who loyally give their affection to a team that has had, as of late, shown nothing but total disdain for the whole bunch of them. I guess endless years of sellouts and giving the team a new stadium (a lousy one at that) with tax-payer money counts for nothing. Someone really needs to remind Pat Bowlen of one really important fact. This ISN’T his team. This franchise belongs to the state of Colorado and the fans who boldly stepped up to the plate years ago to save it from moving to who knows where. I’ve always been in Bowlen’s corner because I believe he is one of the NFL’s best owners. But given the circumstances as of late he has fallen off the pedestal. To entrust this franchise to a kid who has yet to coach a down in the NFL is beyond belief. Does Cutler share the blame in this mess? Absolutely. But had the reins not been handed over to a brat with no experience as a head coach this disaster would have never happened.

  1. I was on Yahoo and found your blog. Read a few of your other posts. Good work. I am looking forward to reading more from you in the future.

  2. Drew,

I love the ‘toon. There is an inherent ambiguity in it. Is McDaniels destroying the franchise or excising a cancer with that handsaw?

Your opinion is pretty clear that McDaniels just destroyed the Broncs for years to come. Come the end of December, I fear that you will be right.

I still think (hope?) there may be something about the “Cutler is a locker-room cancer” theory. Questions about Cutler’s aloof manners and acting out after Shanny’s firing certainly make it appear as if he saw himself as “The Bronco” rather than one of the team. These questions continued to linger and were only exacerbated by the events of the last six weeks. Maybe this whole thing was a play by Bowlen/McDaniels to move Cutler out (for whom, I don’t know) while maximizing his trade value. McDaniels appears to have the same Belichik approach to players being commodities first. If so, then Cutler as a prima-dona would never have fit, and likely would have had a poor season thus reducing his trade value in the next off season.

    On a separate note…

Congratulations should go to Bus Cook for engineering another franchise-destroying QB controversy. The amazing thing, he did it by simply making Cutler stop talking. The zen to this approach phenomenal. Cutler got everything he (or Cook) wanted by simply doing nothing. What is the sound of one Cutler hand clapping? A ticket out of town to a more lucrative contract.

  3. Hey, Drew. This cartoon is eerily reminiscent of an Avs cartoon you did a few years back when they thought it would be a good idea to give away Chris Drury and Stephan Yelle… and to a division rival, no less! The difference is that you used a dentist in that one. Let’s hope the Broncos have better sense than Pierre Lacroix when they name their terms!

  4. There could be something behind all these Jay Cutler behavior rumors. I’m not privy to anything on them so I can’t speculate. Clearly McDaniels wasn’t happy about something he saw in Cutler, or, perhaps maybe what he didn’t see, which was Matt Cassell. I’m always leery of those upper level management types who after taking a position at a new company have to bring in their own people to feel comfortable. To me it’s a clear sign of insecurity.

I’m still trying to grasp the fact the Broncos are about to lose a pro bowl quarterback, in his prime, no less. It’s a lot easier to hire a bad coach then it is to find a pro bowl quarterback. if you don’t believe me ask Detroit or Chicago.

  5. Good Morning from Omaha…

and so it begins, the Bronco descent into the black hole of losing.

That may be a bit strong but Bowlen has to back HIS coach. the quarterback is, in his

mind just a tool in his tool chest, and you can always buy another “monkey”wrench.

Evidently in the end Shanahan had too much control of the team and Pat wanted it back.

What Pat knows about football will become abundantly clear as the season wears on.

I can only hope that Mickie D will be one of those competent people that smart people

are supposed to surround themselves with to succeed.

It looks like Pat Bowlen has gone to the Clark Hunt school of football management and blew it all

out to start over again. We shall see if it works both in Kansas CIty and Denver. Which is

ironic because both teams have dipped into the New England School of Football for alledged

    Summa Cum Laude graduate students.

    Bring on the draft.

  6. In this day and age if you are throwing for 4500 yards and going to the pro bowl then a little “behavior” is expected. How hard would it have been in the beginning for McDaniels to simply make a call to Cutler and say hey this is what is happening. He knew he was doing something underhanded in trying to get Cassell “his guy” and didn’t want Cutler to know. How is it possible that this franchise in a few very short months has gone from contenders to completely turned upside down because of this coach?

  7. McDaniels made a mistake. Then he tried to fix it by anouncing on tv that Cutler was there guy. Cutler since then has been acting like a whiney spoiled kid. Cutler needs to grow up. He spoke out last season about Marshall needing to become a team player. So does Cutler. Yes his pride is probably hurt but it happens. He should have been the bigger man and accepted McDaniels apology.

  8. What a complete mess. Franchise QB’s don’t grow on trees… I heard Titan’s may be looking to move Young. *sighs*

    Time to watch rerun’s of the 97′ & 98′ Bronco’s seasons again.

  9. I want to blame everybody except Cutler and McDaniels.

Starting with the media that needed something to report on that only stoked the fire.

The sports teams for paying these kids so much that they think they are the one and only person on the field.

Jay Cutlers upbringing letting him know it is OK to quit his team.

The NFL for taking the word team out of professional sports and replacing it with business.

All of this contributed to the problem not just Cutler and McDaniels.

Let’s give credit where credit is due.

  10. You know what I’m sick of all the negativity revolving around McDaniels and Cutler. Truth is Cutler has acted like a sissy, he got hurt he was gonna be traded and to retaliation is to ignore phone calls, not be a leader by not showing up to workouts and wants to be traded now? He’s a child throwing a tantrum and needs to be gone from the team if he isnt gonna be a leader than he needs to leave. I’m behind McDaniels 100% if that guy can take someone like cassel who hasnt started since high school and make him a star i’m sure any talent that comes to Denver can be molded. So if cutler doesnt want his greatness to be come greater under Jedi Master McDaniels than so Be it good riddance to him. We can do better than cutler we will do better than cutler and we will see how the season rolls out I have confidence. Thanks for listening to my rant

  11. Little Joshy has made the Broncos the laughing stock of the NFL!! Glad to see another Patriot coach go down in flames!!!! I say Bolwen, Little Joshy, Cutler, and Bus Cook ALL deserve blame in this!!!!! Hopefully Little Joshy goes away soon!!!! One phone call started all of this makes me wonder why he was hired in the first place!?!?!?!
