The NFL: The River of Denial

Uncategorized

Big Hits=Big Money. It’s a formula the NFL has perfected throughout the years, encouraging players to hit and hit hard, showing “highlights” of those very hits all the while claiming that they are doing all they can to “clean” up the game. So they fine a few guys (totally up to the leagues discretion) now and again. But they do little to compensate or attempt to help those players of yesteryear who are now aging with severe disabilities related to their years in the NFL. I know. Those players knew the risks. But perhaps those risks have become much larger than we originally knew about. With players becoming bigger and faster and playing at lightening speeds on the field are the risks greater than ever before? We won’t know the results of Junior Seau’s death for some time. But maybe, just maybe, it will force the NFL to address a very clear and present danger.

  1. Dear Drew,

In some ways this cartoon (eearingly) reminds me of another cartoon you did though that one was for boxing. It had the figure of death in boxing gloves. Around him were tombstones of fighters who died in the ring. The symbol of death simply said,”NEXT!”

In some ways this cartoon reminds me of that one.

    All the best

  2. Good Morning from Omaha,

the league has a problem. and the public is not going to like the solution. the nfl has already taken the kickoff out of the game. just a well place the ball at the 30 and let the game start from there. This was done in the name of safety and to cut back on injuries.

Maybe they should automatically eject players hit with unnecessary roughness penalties. That would put the players on notice that their rough play will not be tolerated.

I know the horse has left and the barn door is now locking but the league has dealt with things like this before and there is not much else that can be done.

Fines don’t seem to get there attention but multiple game suspensions, without pay, might. Coaches would then realize they can’t use the star players for several weeks as the loss of the stars will hurt the teams chances. The coaches will then teach proper technique, I know I am dreaming here, or lose there job because of the losses.

These guys are supposed to be football players and not football killers.

And yes the CBA would have to be reopened to get this done so the chances are slim and none and slim is really limping.

Strive for excellence, nothing but your best.

    Gene
