Thank Goodness the Dan Hawkins error is over. Finally. It was ugly. It resembled intramural football. Or worse. It alienated fans, alumni and big dollar boosters. It lost money. Lots of it. But more than that it lost it’s integrity. On a Saturday afternoon when Hawkins seemed more interested in getting his son, Cody, closer to some stupid passing records than he was actually winning a game well in hand, he committed an unforgivable mistake. He put his own interests and those of his son above those of the football program he had promised to protect and preserve. He was content in this weekends loss to Kansas to throw the rest of the student athletes on his roster under the bus. In adversity, it is said, true character is revealed. Saturday the real Hawkins was exposed as a fraud whose only goal during his tenure as a head coach was to do everything he could to further his sons college football career at the expense of everyone and everything else. I’m just glad that someone at CU was finally wise enough to put an end to it all.

Last year we produced the first ever Drew Litton wall calendar. They sold very well and everyone seemed to like them. so the question begs would you buy another one this year if they were available? Please let me know.

So my apologies to all of my fellow Cornhuskers fans. I was wrong. It was Texas. It’s always Texas. And how do I know for sure? I grew up there. I know the way it works.

Well, this certainly changes things. The Big 12 lives to fight another day. Or at least until the Longhorns get a better offer. Never underestimate the power of a Texan or two to broker a deal behind closed doors. That’s pretty much what happened with a lot of wheeling and dealing to get it done. I wouldn’t be surprised if old LBJ himself had something to do with it.

So I’ll set the record straight. Though many will look at Colorado and Nebraska as the rats who ran early, it’s now very clear. It was Texas setting them up as scapegoats. And set them up they did.

with apologies to Gene!

It only took one single move to blow up what was once a pretty good athletic conference. The Nebraska Cornhuskers desertion to the Big Ten (with considerable help from Texas, which is, well, ALWAYS about Texas) means the Big 12 is over. Colorado is off to the PAC-10, which I think is long-term a BIG mistake and things as we know them around here will never be quite the same. So much for the Nebraska rivalry, which was, really, no rivalry at all.

I hate to see what is happening to NCAA sports. But it was inevitable. It’s about the MONEY. It’s always about the money. And the smaller schools are the losers.

The Buffs should have gone to the Mountain West. It pains me to say that, but I think the way things work in Boulder make it difficult for the Buffs to compete with the USC’s of the world. (Texas and Nebraska for that matter). Now I want to hear it from you. What do you think of the whole mess? Start typing those comments.

I spend a few days in Texas and all hell breaks lose in Boulder. Clearly Dan Hawkins is under fire. The question isn’t if but when. Rumors have everyone from Mike Shanahan and his son taking over to bringing Knute Rockne back to life. And Hawk hasn’t been fired yet.
I was excited when CU hired Hawkins. I liked his enthusiasm, his focus on the student part of student/athlete and his track record at Boise St. After he landed Darrell Scott, I honestly thought this program was on its way back. How wrong was I? Very. Hawkins biggest error will always be his apparent favoritism of his own son at Quarterback. Nepotism never works well in college athletics. Even Pete Maravich and his father Press were a bad mix at LSU. Nothing good ever really comes from it. (And let’s face it, Cody is no Pete Maravich). The whole thing is a shame, because the Buffs will be back to square one in the process. Perhaps it’s time for all of us to lower our expectations in Boulder, accept the fact that they can never compete on the level with Texas, Oklahoma, and Nebraska. Oh, sure, maybe a season or two, but nothing that lasts very long. I hope I’m proven wrong on this theory, that I’m way off base on all of this and that Hawk stays and builds CU into a national title contender. And I hope to win the lottery as well. But we know how that turns out now don’t we.

On my grill for Labor Day. CROW.
I was a very outspoken 2 years ago when CSU hired Steve Fairchild. It wasn’t necessarily about him, but more about the way that CSU pushed Sonny Lubick out the door. Regardless, I will be eating crow today. Lots of it.
CSU, out-classed, out-played, out-coached, out-executed, out-ran, out-hit and clearly out-recruited the Colorado Buffaloes on Sunday night. Dan Hawkins, not one time, ever looked as if he even knew there was a game being played on Sunday night, and his son, Cody, wasn’t much better. But Cody can’t be blamed for a team that exhibited a complete lack of preparation. CU didn’t play at all like stoic Buffaloes but instead cowered more like deer in headlights. Please feel free to comment away about the game. For, me I apologize to those fans of Ram nation. Clearly I was wrong as to who made the better hire as their head coach. Now, does crow go OK with Tabasco sauce?

Today’s View From the Bull Pen

The World is in Chaos, The Economy is in the Dumpster...And Peyton Manning throws a Pass. Nice to know we have it all in perspective.

There isn't a way to leave comments in the Bull Pen (that I've found yet) so please feel free to leave your comments under the latest cartoon that I post.
