I’m excited to announce that I’ll be doing a Broncos cartoon after every game this fall that will appear on this blog and on 9News at 10 throughout the season. I’ll also be doing one additional cartoon each week on 9News as well.
It’s all pretty cool. Thanks to everyone for continuing to read my blog. Please tell as many of your friends that I’m still drawing sports cartoons here 5 days a week and encourage them to bookmark the page. It will help me immensely in my quest to continue to bring you daily sports cartoon content. And, if you’re feeling generous, please feel free to donate a buck or two through PayPal. Your support is greatly appreciated.

Shortly after the Broncos captured their first Super Bowl victory I was faced with a dilemma. The Elway Covers the Cup cartoon had been pretty popular but, of course, no longer relevant. Larry Strutton, the publisher of the News at the time paid me a visit one afternoon at my Cartoon Cubicle, just a few days after I returned from covering Super Bowl XXXII in San Diego. He suggested I should revisit the Elway-Sakic cartoon. I didn’t relish digging out an idea I’ve ready printed and retooning it for publication, but I had to admit Larry had a point. So, after a few hours of swaet I came up with this Elway Reeves cartoon with Dan Reeves coveting Elway’s Lombardi trophy. Imagine my horror when the very next year Elway faced off against Reeves in Super Bowl XXXIII. I didn’t want to have to revisit it again. Thank goodness Elway made sure I didn’t have to by totally crushing the Falcons for another Super Bowl victory. This one was drawn in pen and ink and colorized in Adobe PhotoShop.

I usually work today for tomorrow, which does really strange things to your central nervous system. Deadlines are tight. The closer you get to it the faster and louder the heart pounds. The secret is quieting the sucker long enough to get an idea to seep through. This cartoon was drawn right after the Colorado Avalanche captured its first Stanley Cup and a year before John Elway would hoist his first Lombardi Trophy. I had the idea a few weeks before the Avalanche clinched the championship which absolutely NEVER happens. I could hardly wait to draw it for publication. One of the prints hangs on Joe Sakic’s wall. It’s drawn in pen and ink and then watercolored.
