Imagine if you will, John Elway leaving the Broncos to play for the Raiders in 1995. Imagine what that would have felt like as a Broncos fan and you can get a sense of what it’s like in Cleveland today after losing LeBron James to the Heat. Here’s my cartoon about it all over on ESPN.com. I feel for the folks in Cleveland. Yeah, even the Browns fans.

Now this is my idea of a blissful weekend. No LeBron, No Tiger, No vuvuzelas and no more baseball on steroids. Just give me a grill, a cooler, and my annual football preview magazines and I’m one happy camper. Oh. And earplugs for the fireworks across the street.
I’ll be drawing for the Tribune on Saturday so stay tooned. In the meantime have a Happy and safe 4th of July weekend!

The decisions LeBron James must make in the weeks or months ahead reminds me just how coddled and spoiled so many of today’s athletes are. For a lot of them, everything is handed to them on a silver platter once they begin to exhibit outstanding athletic skills. I know some come from impoverished backgrounds and are brought up in neighborhoods that are crime and drug ridden. But it’s the athletes who are given special treatment early on way beyond those afforded to their peers. And then they become entitled. They lose perspective of their place in life and no longer can relate to the fans who pay their way.
I’ve always wondered why teachers aren’t the ones we should be celebrating. Their contribution to the world is far greater than a few 20 year olds who can dunk a basketball. Just saying.
